ordering over seas innoculations? (dumdog)

 I have a few thoughts on this.

 First, I should think that the local vaccines would be geared toward the local diseases. As far as I know, rabies is rabies everywhere, (and you can't order rabies vaccine from the states because a vet ALWAYS has to give it.) But I should think that the parvo etc. vaccines in the UK might differ slightly from the ones in the US? Maybe? I wonder.

Secondly, how can you get a vaccine through the mail? It needs to be kept cold, it can't sit for any length of time at room temp and still be viable, even the powdered ones.

Thirdly, how does one know that you are REALLY get a vaccine, and not someone sending you a fake Chinese powder?
 

in another PM this morning he said

just run of the mill distemper, lepto and parvo jabs. i think they used to come from arizona. used to pay about 30 dollars per box of 25 jabs.. the vets over here charge 4o-50 pounds per single jab.

those are all very good points you made and i dont know if he's considered the cold factor and difference in vaccines over here vs over there.  all he wants to know is why he used to get them before and now he cant. thought i would ask if anyone here would know the why of the situation. 

ETA about the rabies

i heard you must the vet give that vaccine if you want the tag, because if your dog ever bit someone and you got sued you MUST have that tag proving he got the shot. i wouldnt know a thing about that because a vet always did it for me and i always got the tag to put on the collar - and my dog has never bitten anyone... - my dad has ordered and given his own shots to his dogs for decades, especially the rabies.. maybe he's just been lucky  

I'm sure it's hugely cheaper for him to order from the states because of the dollar value alone. It'd be like us buying from Mexico rather than here. His pound goes a lot further here.

My guess for the reason he can't get them shipped there anymore would be refrigeration and the costs associated with that. But it could be a trade thing....who knows.

Kenya's breeder gave her vaccines, including rabies (her husband is a vet).  I wasn't given a tag, but I have a certificate.  I keep a copy in my wallet so I can always prove she's had the vaccine.  Plus, my dogs are registered with the county and wear a county tag.  You cannot register without proof of a rabies vaccine. 

Tell your friend to check the DEFRA rules. I know they got a major overhaul when the Pet Passport scheme (eliminating quarantine for titered dogs) was put into place.

 I know in Australia (I have been reading the Australian export/import rules :P), biologicals period (which includes vaccines, stored semen and embryos, etc) are very, very carefully regulated and take all sorts of permits to import (exporting is no big deal.) and I suspect the UK is probably along the same lines.

 
I'm sure there are vet supply houses in the UK- that's where I'd start- or get on the dogzonline forums and ask around there where other people get their vaccines in bulk. It seems like (from the GS list I'm on) fewer breeders give the first shots there than here (rather than having the vet do it), but quite a few still do it.
