Need New Heaters - Any Opinions or Information?

We don't have central heating, so we use a pellet stove and electric space heaters. We are looking into getting a different kind of heat for our home.

    Infrared Heaters

For the price of a new pellet stove, we could get several of these and place them around the house. It's a lot cleaner, too!

So, does anyone have any information or opinions about using infrared heaters as a primary heat source in our home? We have a fairly mild winter here - it does snow and freeze, but not too often.

Thanks for any thoughts or ideas (another option, perhaps?) you might have!

The cost of operation would be something that would concern me.

We live out in the boonies and use propane to run the furnace and water heater.  In the winter, our propane bill can be $500 a month.  We are considering a pellet stove too.  Either corn or wood.  We have been kicking it around for a couple of years now and still haven't done anything.  Storage, especially of corn, is a real issue for me.  Corn attracts rodents.

What I would like to do, especially since we just finished our basement, is put a wood stove down there.  We have 20 acres of woods so we could run that for really no cost.  But wood is messy too and attracts rodents and snakes.

I feel your pain.  We can't decide what to do either.

From what I can find, the energy efficiency of these IR Heaters is one of their biggest selling points. Here are some more articles if you're interested. I would really investigate the IR for your basement.

We just bought a brand new large pellet stove and we buy our pellets by the ton. But we can smell it in the house, it's loud and it's the kind that runs all the time. We HATE it. It's a Harmon, top of the line and we're going to return it. If you want reasons to hate pellet stoves, just let me know. Wink It could be that we just can't get good service because we shouldn't be able to smell the fumes in the house... It's got a leak or something.

We also have plenty of wood (boonies) and we have a fireplace in our kitchen, but I don't like to have to build fires all the time, and like you said, it's messy.

    Thanks for the input. Smile
