Collar that doesn't cut hair?

I can not for the life of me find a collar that I'm happywith for Max. Every one that I have tried has cut Max's hair around his neck. I've tried several Nylon collars and a leather one. I haven't tried a rolled leather, but wouldn't they hurt him if he pulls on leash. He doesn't normally pull now, but every now and then he has a relapse into his pulling ways. What collars have you tried on your long-haired dogs that have not cut the hair around their neck?

I use rolled leather with good, but not perfect, results. Tojo pulls sometimes and it doesn't seem to bother him any more than the other collar. I thought of that, too, but I think that if you have a dog that pulls so much that it would be a problem, you should be using a harness or halti anyway.

Well, I do use a Easy Walk harness, but I just made another thread in the health section ebcause I think that it's rubbing his skin raw. He only wears it when we go on walks or through areas that gets him really distracted. So I'm going to start alternating which one I walk him with.

When I took care of a Chessie with curlier hair, I used a slip lead instead of attaching a lead to his regular collar. That way, I could position the lead better than his normal collar, and if his collar was giving him "collar neck" (my name for the hair coming out or getting parted), the lead would not exaggerate it. I didn't take the collar off, b/c that had his tags, I just used whatever slip lead I had above the collar.

I do the same with my uncle's dog, but she's got short hair and no collar neck. However, attaching leads to her normal collar is a guarantee that it will break and she'll be free. She also stays under control with a better positioned slip lead.

Ixa has problems with harnesses chaffing, too. I did a thread on that a while back, heh. [&:] I think Ixa's got sensitive skin.

I've been using this collar http://tazlab.com/TL_collars.htm and loving it. It's also a safety release so she can't get stuck. It doesn't irritate or disrupt her hair or skin at all. It's not just another nylon collar, in my book.

Some people put sheepskin tubes on the harness, like horsemen do to halters so they don't rub the hair off horse's noses :-)

Rolled leather collars are the easiest on hair. I use them on my bichons and have no broken hair issues- I keep their necks scissored into the longer arch too.

I think also that the rolled would be the best for what you are looking for.

Well, it sounds like rolled leather is the most popular answer. I'll pick one up from the local co-op on Monday and give it a try. Thanks and I'll let everyone know how it works out.

Just a thought, would having a wider collar help? I believe the one he has been wearing is 3/4". It might be 1 inch, but it doesn't look like it.

My dogs have rolled leather collars which have their tags attached. I walk mine either by their Ruff Rider seat belts or a snap flat collar. We haven't had problems with the rolled collar & 'ring around the neck' marks & the flat isn't on long enough to mark. I could see it happening if a dog pulled a lot though.
