UTI or spring fever?

    UTI or spring fever?

My 10 month old beagle puppy has recently started scratching at the door to go out what seems like every 10 minutes.  I am thinking that he just wants to go out there to check out the yard, see what the neighbor dogs are doing, check on his toys etc.  but I can't be sure because he is peeing most of the times he goes out.  I don't know if he is just squeezing out a little because he is out there because he can make it through the night without going.  And when he is tired after daycare, he doesn't do it.  I am thinking I need to put my foot down and just not let him out.  Should I just ignore his persistent scratching or should I tell him no?  I tried ignoring him yesterday and he just scratched faster and harder and would not stop.  I am thinking we have a case of spring fever on our hands.  [:D]

Is he neutered? Could there be a female in heat nearby?

Heh...that's why I love doggy doors!
If he doesn't do it when really tired out....I'd probably say it's boredom. Many Beagles enjoy being out and about sniffing in their yards when the weather's nice.

Thanks Candace and Gina.  He is neutered and I don't think there are any females close by.  He does love it outside so I was figuring it wasn't a UTI but the in and out is what is driving me nuts![&:]  He is probably just checking things out.  He will definitely be getting more exercise.  Thanks again!  Kristin

Now my first advice would be to take a urine sample to the vet.  When he comes in does he go right to the waterbowl and drink??  How much does he 'go' when he goes -- 2 drops and then a couple of steps and he goes again?

Some dogs drink a lot when they have a UTI -- it makes it burn less.
Some dogs DON'T drink *anything* when they have a UTI -- it burns to pee so they don't drink so they won't have to pee.

If he comes in every time he's been out and goes to the water bowl for a slurp he's probably got a UTI.  Watch him tho -- if he's assuming the 'position' but not doing much he also could surely have a UTI and they can be pretty serious if you let them go.

If he's going 'out' and going -- that would concern me.  Most of the time if a dog has spring fever they will just go out and GO OUT!!! Rah!

This made me think. Onyx will "Pretend" to pee when she thinks I want her to come back in. I know she's pretending cause she'll squat wherever she is standing and look over her shoulder at me like,"Look ma I can't go in just yet, I'm Peeeeeeeeeeing!!!" But she isn't cause half the time she's on the patio and no puddle forms. Its only when she's having fun out there.

Yup I have a couple that will squeeze out a drop or two...or pretend when I give the command...JUST to make me happy and come in lmao.

I watched when he is out there and it seems like he is just going a little bit but is not having any problems getting it out.  His drinking habits have not changed.  I think I am convinced he is just going out to look around and then he is saying see I did have to pee mom. [;)

Do you take him for walks?  If so, does he squat a lot on the walks lately?  That is how I can tell when April has that problem, she has had it twice now, a bladder infection.  She would squat to pee about 20 times on a walk and when she did I took her right to the vet.  I have changed her food to Innova and have not had a problem since although the vet said it had nothing to do with her food, but I'm not so sure about that.
