A big giant *thanks* to everybody who posted comments and recommendations about the dentist! It makes me feel a lot better to hear other peoples' experiences, and to know that it's most likely going to go okay.
Yep, there are people willing to help you deal, it's just a matter of finding them. Around here we have a few dentist that do "sedation dentistry" and other techniques specifically designed for people who are scared. Make the appointment and just don't think about it until then. I had mine done less than two weeks before my wedding, not that I was nervous about it, but if I was the wedding planning would have kept my mind off of the dentist.
My friend Taylor had hers done when she lived with me. Our other friend Melissa picked her up from the surgeon's and took her home. Taylor was babbling total nonsense! Then Melissa had to go to the pharmacy and pick up her meds, so I had to "babysit" a 20 year old!! While Melissa was gone getting the medications, Taylor was basically doing the post-op equivalent of drunk dialing on her cell phone before I could take it away. She called some random person and was like "uhhh....who dis? uh...you not my mah, I gah go now bye." Then she somehow managed to call her mom so I got on the phone and reassured her mom that she was fine and we had it under control. Then, she insisted she wanted chapstick because her lips hurt, so I gave her the chapstick. She started putting it on her bottom lip, but basically smeared it all over her chin. I was laughing so hard I was crying. She goes, "whah so funny?" She kept saying "Ah cahnt feel my mouf." and tapping at her cheeks. We had to hold her hands for a while because she was seriously aggravating the wounds by tapping on her face.
