Rascal's getting his teeths cleaned right now!

I love my vet here in CA, and in a couple of weeks we're moving to CT where I don't like my vet particularly much, so even though Rascal isn't in dire need of a dental right this moment his teeth are kind of icky and he will need a dental soon. Soooo.... off he went to the vet this morning, for a dental and a microchip (if he's going under, might as well chip him so it won't hurt). This vet is really good and thorough and careful and does blood tests before anesthesia ("just in case";) and gives IV fluids the whole time they're under. So even though they're painfully expensive I feel good leaving Rascal in their hands.

It's so silly, even though he's only been gone a couple of hours the house is awfully empty without him! Here's hoping for nice clean teeth and an easy recovery from the sedation.

My new vet is like yours in CA.  I really like him.  I hope Rascal comes out of sedation fine & has the pretties smile on the block.  Give him some lovin's from me when he gets home.  I have a real soft spot in my heart for him.

Oh a pretty doggie with pretty teeth !  what more could you ask for :)

Its SO nice when you have a vet you can trust.   I'm sure he'll be fine - he's in excellent hands.

I know that empty feeling - Prancer and I BOTH have separation anxiety - I miss her as much as she misses me (except I hide it alot better LOL).      Let us know when Mr Smiles is home and enjoy sharing those "fresh breath" kisses !

The vet just called - he's (barely) out of anesthesia, everything's done, and he's looking good! 4 hours till I can go pick him up! Thanks for the good wishes, anesthesia is always a little scary!!

My cat had to have a dental when he was only 1.  I love my vets because they don't rip me off.  $72 for bloodwork, anesthesia, and any extractions (weren't necessary).   When I went to pick him up, he was so moody the vet techs asked me to come back and get him.  He was cowering at the back of the cage, growling in rage.  I think they expected him to be happy to see me.  I just grabbed him by his scruff and pushed him into his crate, lol.  When Kenya needs a dental I want them to show clip her nails again.  She HATES anyone touching her feet and I'm so scared, I just clip a tiny bit of tip off every week or so.

WOW! You don't even want to know what the total is going to be for today... to give you a hint, $50ish just for the microchip, and $80 just for the bloodwork! Crying  But when it comes to anesthesia, better safe (and broke) than sorry, and my vet really knows her stuff, so I suck it up and just eat a little less for a few weeks after a major procedureStick out tongue

Try giving him a raw marrow bone a week now and you'll be amazed at how it will maintain them.  I'm too chicken to give much raw (Florida being the bacteria capital of the known Universe) but I just buy a package of marrow bones and keep frozen ... and even Kee LOVES them (she doesn't have many teeth left but dang ... she tries!!)

I'm so glad he did well.  Dr. B will mask mine down without giving sedative ... whch is the best of all worlds and less dangerous.  But I don't blame you for doing it while you can have a vet you feel good about do it.

Look around when you go back east -- see if you can't find someone else.  Betcha can!!

I'm glad everything went well.  Its great to have a vet you can completely trust.  I have that here.  But the one in the city was terrible.

$50 for a chip?!?!?!  Ours are $10-$15.  I think a lot of vet prices and such are "cost of living."  My friend is a cat vet in a very affluent area and they charge $300-$400 for the exact SAME procedure, not even including teeth extractions.  Lol, Michigan has the worst economy in the country.  I would literally laugh if someone tried to charge me that much.  Either that, or I have a vet that actually doesn't care about money.  Who knows?  I wonder how much anaesthesia is at cost?  My cat probably weighs more than Rascal, lol, and the anaesthesia was included in the $72 total price.  They don't do any dentals without anaesthesia.
