    fence fighting

my neighbors dogs have been ramming our 8 foot high redwood fence, they are both young lab puppies but they are getting pretty big and their bark is fierce. anyway, my dog goes over and as soon as they ram the fence he starts a vicious snarling/attacking at this little hole in the fence about the size of a quarter for about 30 seconds.i guess they get snout to snout/eye to eye. my dog and their dogs  whine and run  up and down the fence and can do this for hours on and off. any simple solutions? the dogs have never met my dog and my dog is so laid back so this is a suprise. i dont know why the other dogs start it but i guess its just about territory or what? their dogs bark at anything and are young and not fixed, so maybe when they get older they might mellow? needless to say the state of that fence may be in jeopardy lol . is it wise for these dogs to even meet now?

I'm having a similar problem with my neighbor's dogs. They have 2 JRTs and if they see or hear us or our dogs out back they go into crazy barking mode. It honestly sounds like they're attacking each other and is really scary. One of my dogs (lab) has a super high prey drive and when she hears them going crazy, she runs and hits our fence and has now broken a couple of boards Angry. I'm pretty sure that letting her meet them wouldn't help in our case, so we just bring her inside when it happens. I'll be anxious to hear what advice others have though.

yes i have caught my dog digging on a few occasions trying to get to the other side, i dont know if its to get in a fight or play but i doubt he wants to play with them and i doubt they would want the same. if i am not home and god forbid they get together 2 labs and a pitbull unsupervised in those circumstances would be ugly. i hope some people have some ideas for us all

i've only had one experience with a fence fight.. well ok two experiences.. or three and a half?

anyway.. when my grandmother's rottiX was still alive - we took possession of him since no one else wanted to bother with a giant overly dominant dog with buzz saw teeth - he pretty much kept to himself. he was older, still intact but rather a jolly laid back fellow unless he saw a cat.

the people nextdoor had a mini schauzer, also older, still intact, typical terrier but not overly obnoxious. when we FIRST moved in we didnt have a dog Sampson would walk through the fence to come visit... which was ok with us for the most part. But when we got Sue and Lady the neighbours decided they didnt want to take chances with their little dog so they fixed their half of the fence.

One day while Sue was outside running around Sampson rushed at the fence as usual but this time Sue didnt feel like being cussed out, so he rushed the fence too... they snapped, snarled, barked... we were inside when we heard it...  by the time we got out the door Sue had Sampson by the lip, snout through the fence.. he let go when he heard us and Sampson ran back to his doorstep.. miraculously he was ok!!

few weeks went by when it happened again...  This time Sampson had learned not to stick his nose through the fence.. but Sue, smart doggy, bit the fence wire, pulled back and let it go, popping Sampson square in the face.. once again he ran back home and Sue went about his business..

Then one day when everyone was at work.. Sue got out of the fence.. The lady nextdoor told us what happened.. She saw a giant black dog moseying around her yard... and so did Sampson.. who charged this big black dog.. they fought, rolled down the enbankment, into a ditch, out of sight for a few seconds, then up the other side... standing nose to nose.. sniffing each other....wagging tails.... then that was all. never had another problem out of either of them.... the neighbour was impressed that Sue didnt kill her dog.. also impressed that her dog didnt have any cuts on him... i was thanking God we didnt get sued!!!

Sometimes my next door neighbor doggy sits her daughters lab and Max and Molly really go at each other by the fence.  You'd almost expect the fence to come tumbling down.  Yet, when we put them on leash and bring them out front to meet each other, they're absolutely fine. The hackles go up also when we're walking on the greenbelt and there's a dog barking from inside his own fenced yard.  I just thought it had something to do with knowing there's another dog there and not being able to understand why the dog is "invisible."

I was thinking the same thing.  Kind of like the mail carrier, dogs bark at them because they come to the house and then leave.  It could be they act the way they do thru the fences, because they just don't know who/what's over there.  I would see about letting the dogs meet each other (under very close supervision, of course) and maybe that would satisfy they're curiosity.  Especially w/ the dogs next door that are still pups.  I think older dogs and pups or even two dogs that are pups, seem to do pretty good.  When we first took Misty down to the boat, there are people down there with all older dogs...a GS, a huge black lab, another BC/mix, a pitbull, and a rat terrier.  Misty actually got along with all of them, I think because the other dogs picked up on the fact that she was a pup.  With the exception of the GS, who is very dominant female, but after meeting Misty several times, it just got better and better.  Misty always wants to play, she's very sociable w/ everyone!  Other than that, I really don't know what else you can do.  But possibly getting them together so they know who's on the other side, might help.  Good Luck, to everyone!

It's not a fence thing, but Charlie will go nuts if a dog is in front of the house (he is inside in looking out the window), but if we are outside, he greets every dog with happy body language, butt sniffs etc.  So maybe it is the "can't see what's there so I will bark at it" thing??
