I don't think that bird's a bushtit... looks like a dove to me. Maybe it's a young mourning dove, and that's why it's so fluffy? Or some other pigeon/dove

No it's definitely not a pigeon/dove, or morning dove, I know that for a fact.  The doves and morning doves, tried to move in (my house) once, and only ONCE, so I'm too familiar with those PITA's.  I think it looks like the pic Gina posted of the Bushtit.  Wow!  Almost typed the other...pheww!

I still agree w/ Gina.  Here's a website I found with the Bushtit http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Bushtit.html I went back and forth from your photo, to the website and I would have to say it's this.  I don't believe it's the bird your BIL said, I looked that one up and the colors and features are all wrong.  Same with the Gray Catbird, the features don't match.  Check out the feet and beak.  They seem to be the most distinguished features.  Also, if the bird on your porch has a long tail feather, then most likely it's the Bushtit.  The little buggers cute.  There aare really interesting facts on this sight, plus you can download the sound of the bird so, this may help too.

Mocking bird has white along the tail feathers and along the wings when flying.  That bird also looks like it has white along the tail feathers but never really get to see the wings.  I agree that it's a mockingbird.  Just as people have variences with skin tone and hair color, so do birds across this country.  The eastern Rufous Sided Towhee does not sound like the western Rufous Sided Towhee.  The eastern Dark Eyed Junco is much darker than the western version.  Wildlife Biology degree and Ornithology as a class.

And as someone else said, all birds will get "poofty" when cold.  They fluff their feathers to create air pockets in between to help keep them warm.

Another bit of trivia.  Birds sleep sitting on branches.  How do they not fall off?  When they squat down (bend their little legs) it's a reflex action that their toes curl tighter because everything is connected.  So as they bend their legs, their toes curl tighter and tighter.  Big Smile

     Mockingbird

    Description

    • Medium-sized songbird.
    • Long tail.
    • Pale gray above, whitish below.
    • Bill thin.
    • Two white wingbars.
    • Large white patches show in wings in flight.
    • White outer tail feathers.

    Bushtit

    Description

    • Size: 7-8 cm (3-3 in)
    • Weight: 4-6 g (0.14-0.21 ounces)
    • Very small bird.
    • Long tail and short wings.
    • Plain gray-brown without markings.
    • Short black bill.
    • Some males, especially in Mexican form, have a black mask.

Definitely a Mockingbird.  Remember, Mockingbirds can mimic other songs, so you can't always distinguish them by song.

I agree with Gina, too. It IS irresistibly poofty!  But a Bushtit is 3 to 4 inches long and this fella is 7"...

    • Gold Top Dog

Maybe he's just an excessively large bushtit? Stick out tongue

    • Gold Top Dog

Hey, some bushtits are larger than others. But I always say, "Anything more than a nestful is a waste".
