    Home renovations STINK! (rant!)

Having tile put in today.... they started yesterday.

Back in the beginning of AUGUST I decided to get tile put in for my kitchen, family room, and downstairs bathroom. The bathroom was carpeted, so we definitely wanted that *out,* especially since we'd had some plumbing problems. I had to bring a mold inspector in to test for mold spores, so to increase my chances of getting a good "score" I tore the carpet out of the bathroom myself before the test. Then I started getting estimates for the downstairs and my two upstairs bathrooms, which also had been carpeted.

Much hedging on the downstairs, so fine, had just the upstairs done in September.

In October, attempting to schedule a time for the downstairs, suddenly there were "complications." They had to come out and re-measure. The second measurements didn't match the first. Then apparently it was a different company that had measured the first time. Then company #2, which had done the upstairs, changed their downstairs estimate by about $1,000. (???) Company #2 also badmouthed company #1, saying they had "licensing issues," which was blatantly false, but apparently company #2 was better than cheaper company #1?

So at this point I get fed up and call company #3. We talk, some more hedging, maybe I have to buy their tile, maybe I can buy their tile somewhere else...

Last week I firm things up with company #3, who's the cheapest, and they send out a guy to re-measure. I buy their tile, sign their contract, put down a deposit. The day before they're supposed to start, they send out this laaaaaaarge guy, J, to "take a final look before starting tomorrow."

Well, the next morning, it isn't J who shows up to start tiling, it's S. And S wants to know where I want the tile put in, and what else I want done. Despite the fact that I had already gone over this 100000 times with the rep from company #3. Say whaaaat? And then they don't like the kind of grout I wanted to use (epoxy - super stain resistant), so I cave and go out and get some "regular" grout, but apparently I still got the wrong kind because I had to go back AGAIN, all the while they're doing work at my house... and I get back and find they put baseboards in the wrong places while I was out getting their stupid grout. Soooooooo frustrating.

I just hope the floor looks really, really good to make all this fuss worthwhile!  Grrrrrr!

Anyway, just ranting... I'm sure I'm not alone in my frustration with contractors!

Oh man, I haven't gone thru as much as you, but I know how frustrating it can be. I want to have some stuff done, including tile, and I just know it will be a major headache. I just want to go to one of those showrooms, point at what I want, set a date and then come home to find it all done. I'm getting the impression it doesn't work that way??

I'm sure it's going to look great when it's done though and please post pictures Big Smile

Wow!  Do I ever know what you mean!  Only I haven't hired anyone to do any of my work.  I'm redoing all of the floors in my house except the bathroom.  So hardwood has gone into the bedrooms, and will be going into my kitchen/dining room/hallway.  Then I'll lay carpet in the living room.  I've never done flooring before, but I'm learning.  Once I'm done, I'll find some nice tile for my bathroom.  Since its not a huge square footage, I'm gonna splurge and get something I really like.  BUT, I am also making and putting in new baseboards.  Making it isn't hard, and I like that I can design my own moulding, but painting is annoying to say the least.  I've done over 150 feet so far and thats just baseboard.  I've still got to do crown moulding.  Plus I thought it would be nice to put a cute little chair rail in Kali's room.  Sigh.....the things I get myself into.  And soooo, I installed baseboard in my room and Kale's room and then realized that I hadn't cut out the vents yet from the floor.  And of course I had marked those behind where the baseboard goes.... and brad nails do not pull out nicely...soooo... since I had in fact already cut out the vent in Kali's room, and Kale and Kali's rooms are pretty much the same layout, I thought the vent would be in the same spot, so I measured both and drilled.  Well that resulted in a hole in Kale's room that shouldn't be there, in his brand new floor... Currently the air purifyer is standing on it...quick fix.Stick out tongue  So I pried off the baseboard, as i should have done in the first place, and cut out the vent where it actually was...ah well, I learned something new....

In any event, I've realized that laying the floor isn't nearly the hard part...And I'm never going to move into a house again while I'm renovating.  At least I have running draining water again.

I remodeled my kitchen last week so I feel for you.  I redid all of my floors in the rest of my house last summer so I went back to the same company and got an estimate.  I also priced some others.  I had so much trouble just getting an estimate from the other companies that I went with the same one that did the rest of my house.  I am so glad that I did b/c basically I told them what I wanted and got it and it was very painless.  I was amazed at how fast and professional of a job they did.  I guess I am just really lucky!

Oh man!  I feel for you.  When I had my floors put in it was fairly painless.  Well except for the fact that we had to stay in a hotel for 2 nights.  The company I chose was very professional, clean & thorough.  I love my new floor.

My night mare was when we had the garage built.  I feel like I need to apologize to my entire neighborhood.  The guys I picked to build my garage were so vocally loud.  Loud I don't mind but the boss would go off on these TIRADES that would make a sailor blush.  Of course these tirades were not whispered.  Most of the time I hid in the house/basement because their yelling stressed me out so much.

I feel your pain!  I have and old house that needs a lot of work...as I have been slowly getting through it I have learned that nothing is as simple as people tell you, and contractors are always a massive headache.  They will take twice as long as promise and cost about 1/3 as much as the estimate!  We had a great contractor that we used for a while...but as he became more popular, our smaller stuff was not important enough for his attention so he didn't supervise his guys as much and the quality went majorly down hill!  So sorry you are going through it!  You are not alone!
