    age old dogs and cats

My 4 month old (today!![:D]) Pembroke is obsessed with my cat. She plays with her like she use to play with her brothers and sisters. There is really only one problem it turns out my cat is allergic to my Dog... its horrible she ends up licking huge holes in her side. The doctor says that cortizone wont have the long term affects on my poor cat like other animals but I dont like my odds. My question is what is the best way to train my dog to be easy with the cat.. they love playing together so its hard to discourage that. But if I can teach her easy then it would make life alot easier.. I realize she is a puppy but what can I say I love my cat!!!

Overgrooming is cats is often due to stress...it doesn't have to be allergy. The cat could simply be very, very stressed out by the puppy (even if it appears to be having fun).

I would not do any more cortisone...and I would confine the puppy daily and allow the cat to be free without having a dog even capable of touching her.

You are right you do need to teach the puppy to leave the cat or really, anything if you ask it to...and focus on you or take a break. I think perhaps saying "leave it", and distracting the pup with a treat or toy they like to break the attention...then interacting with you more, perhaps doing  asit or something, then say "OK" and let the pup go about it's business. If the pup then returns to rough housing...you can then say 'leave it" and repeat...

Then there's the option of leaving a leash on the pup when you are home and attaching it to you so you can control the puppy's interactions with the cat more easily and keep him focused on you and not the cat?

Herding breeds can really fixate and that can lead to obsessive behavior up to and including nipping or hurting the cat.

It is actually an allergy the cortizone shot I got for her once worked. The dog is crated for 3 hours in the morning and then 2.5 in the afternoon so the cat has plenty of time at home by herself. Just teaching her leave it seems hard because she plays so hard to get her pent up energy out.

So it's your feeling that the cat is allergic to the puppies saliva? Because if it were dander she's be miserable as long as the dog in in the same room/household?
