Plaque Control Added to Water?

    Plaque Control Added to Water?

Have any of you heard of this product? You add it directly to the dogs' water, and it supposedly decreases plaque and tartar. I brush the boys' teeth as often as I can, but they absolutely despise it....beef flavored toothpaste or not! Poor Julius acts as though you're trying to perform surgery on him.

Have any of you tried something like this, and if so, what were the results? I'm interested in it, but obviously don't want to spend the money on it if it's not effective. I'm skeptical - seems to good to be true.

Max is the same way about tooth brushing - he acts like he thinks he's getting his tongue ripped out or all his teeth extracted. [:D] He's not even tolerant of the tooth wipes.  I notice that this is supposed to be used in conjunction with tooth brushing but I'm hoping that this alone would be better than nothing. Maybe some of the vets or vet techs would chime in if they know something about this.

I completely understand what you mean! I end up feeling awful for being the bad guy...I wish there was some way to tell them that we're only trying to help! And if they'd sit still for long enough to settle down, they'd realize that ther's nothing awful about it at all!! [8|]

Anyhow, hopefully someone will have some insight on it.

I use a product very similar to that.  I am not really sure how well it works though.  The three older dogs had their teeth cleaned last March and currently they have litle to no tartar building up.  Is it due to the water additive or the teeth cleaning? I'm not sure, but I will say that I don't brush teeth at all.

Abbi must either be weird or we found the best tasting toothpaste in the world.  Of course she licks it off the brush before I really get a chance to brush at all.  Its called enzadent and we have the malt flavor.  It says for vet use only so I must have gotten it from her vet.  I will admit that I am terrrible about rememberring to do it.

I still am hoping that someone will know something about this plaque control to add to the water.  There is still more tarter on Abbi's teeth then I would like to see, even if it is better than when I first got her.

I know...I'm super curious about it too. Sounds as though Bevo has had some luck with it. Maybe I will give it a try just to see if I notice any results. I'll probably order some today, and I will definitely let you guys know!

I asked one of my vets. She didn't think it works. I guess everyone could ask vets. Brushing works best. I also use the dental wipes.

Instead of adding more chemicals to your dog's life, why not address the root of the problem? Species-inappropriate diets?

If you are a kibble feeder, at the very least you might consider offering raw meaty bones (RMB's) to your dog once daily, as they serve to act as nature's floss, toothpaste, and polish all in one.

Periodontal disease is one of the leading diseases in dogs, and it's almost strictly a kibble-based disease. You will almost never find that in dogs who eat species-appropriate diets (and if you do it's found in dogs who were previously kibble-fed dogs).

I guess my point is simply that adding more chemicals is not going to solve the problem. It's only going to mask the symptoms of a larger, underlying issue.

Of course some will disagree, but that's just how it is. [:D]

    Miss Mandy--

My SIL had great luck with this product recommended by her vet:

What is nice is that it's all natural--no chemicals.

    Worth a look.

    Kim~
I didn't happen to notice any chemicals in the product link that I provided. I could have been missing something, but one of the reasons that I was interested in it was for the sole reason that it didn't list any chemical additives.
My dogs do not have periodontal disease, nor do they have any problems with their teeth or gums. Tartar is completely normal, but yes, we would like to prevent problems from occurring. My dogs are not fed "species-inappropriate diets" either, but thanks for the assumption nonetheless.
We are currently ooking into feeding RMB's on the side, so thanks for the suggestion.

Tzumom - thanks for the link!! I will definitely check it out! [:D]

Pet Kiss Plaque & Tartar Control
Active Ingredients: Purified Water, Zinc, Vitamin B, Vegetable Glycerin (not corn derived), Red Beet Juice Extract, (No Preservatives, Artificial Colors, Flavors, Alcohol, Acids or Chemicals).

Sounds healthy enough, but I really don't think it would work that well. I also have to go with the raw bones suggestion to help with the tarter. As said it's natures way, nothings better than that. Another thought it might get a little old your dog having to drink flavored water 24-7.

A while ago, I tried adding something like that to their water. Even though it was supposed to be tasteless, my 2 starting drinking less water, as soon as I put a bowl of wter down without it, they would drink.  I gave up, was afraid they weren't drinking enough.

Actually, the stuff I have been using is not flavored at all & does not have any smell either.  I mixed it & tried a little before the dogs got any....No taste at all.

MissMandy, fair enough regarding the added chemicals. Although I would have to then ask, what exactly are those ingredients doing to "lessen" the amount of plaque on the dog's teeth? Plaque is made up of micro-organisms that feed of of the sugars in diets. What is it about those ingredients that are meant to get rid of this bacteria? The product doesn't seem to explain any of that. It's natural (or at least made from naturally-occurring products), I wouldn't necessarily call it "healthy" by any means, though.

MissMandy, did you ever try the Pet Kiss water additive? If so, how is it working out?  Also, to the person who suggested the raw meaty bones, where do I buy those? What do I look for?
