Is Charlie Overweight?

I'd say not "fat", but getting there. Nip it in the bud. At nine months it's ok to start cranking up the exercise with a small dog. Maybe add some short brisk trots into your walks, up hills if possible?

People really do have a pretty skewed sense of what a dog's proper weight should be. Even as our vet was telling us that Conrad was beginning to get heavy (at about the stage that Charlie seems to be at), everyone around us was saying that Conrad was too skinny. When I said, no actually the vet says he's getting too heavy, we're cutting his food back a little, people were shocked and couldn't believe it! But honestly now that he's back down to where he should be he looks just amazing. My mom was the first one to tell me with both dogs that I shouldn't be cutting their food back, they're too skinny. But now she's the first one to tell me that my dogs look magnificent, now that they're both maintaining a proper weight.

Beagles are fairly notorious for chunking up if you let them. They tend to eat like they've never seen food before and a lot of people take that to mean "Oh the little darling is still hungry, here have some more food!" I think beagles, pugs and doxies are the breeds that I see morbidly obese most often. Take care to nip that in the bud.

Thanks for the feedback.  We definitely want to nip this in the bud.  It makes me so mad to see owners with overweight dogs.  I don't think they realize the damage they are causing them and it is totally in their control most of the times since we do the feeding.

We are going to try to increase his outdoor time; however, with single degree temps out there lately, he just doesn't want anything to do with outside.  I think cutting out the treats will help alot as well as slightly decreasing his food (were were at 1 1/3 cup we are going down to 1 cup).  Soon we will have the new svelt Charlie [:D]

place your thumbs on the dogs spine ( if you cannot feel the spine no sense in going further, your dog is fat LOL!) and your fingers on the ribs...if you can feel the ribs without "fishing" for them and not SEE the ribs, your Beagle is a healthy weight.

I see too many fat beagles...switch to adult food now, and if it's Innova, you can probably feed a pinch less than what the package says. If he gets alot of treats, but enjoys his food anyway, just feed him that as a treat. He is a puppy, though, but don't let him get any heavier. At all.
