Who am I and what am I doing at the animal shelter?

Yesterday morning I went to the animal shelter to volunteer for a couple of hours.  We don't have scheduled days, but can show up any time we have time.  The shelter is not open on Sundays to the public, but 2 doors are unlocked during the time dogs are being walked to alleviate the hassle of getting back into the building.

So I went in through one of the unlocked doors and about halfway down the hall, I was greeted by another volunteer whom I've seen previously but not met.  I can only volunteer on weekends and holidays; she's there during the week.  She does not know me, asked if I needed help.  I said, "I'm Tina and I'm a volunteer, came over to help out for a little while."  She said, "Are you here for community service?"  I said, "no, I'm a regular volunteer."  She replied, "Are you sure you're not community service?"  YES, I AM SURE.

Okay, I understand that there are numerous reasons to double-check that people are who they say they are.  I just didn't quite understand her insistence about me being with community service.

maybe she was expecting someone from community service to be there. OR, maybe SHE was with community service, and her frame of reference for volunteers was a bit off...

You should have just said," Yup, Killed a guy!  And this is all I got!"

Honestly I don't see what difference it would make, except that she would have had to log your hours.  I mean really, hardened criminals don't usually just get community service.  Maybe she was expecting someone else that hasn't been showing up?

    Maybe you have shifty eyes.

Perhaps they are just extremely low on "voluntary" volunteers.

As a fellow volunteer at a shelter I can understand how it is easy to be affected by something like this.  I mean, we are volunteering our free time.  However, let me tell you about what goes on at our shelter.  A lot of people will take a dog out of the kennel and walk it without filling out an adoption form first.  You can't do that.  And they know that when they walk in through the reception area.  Often times when they are asked if they had filled out a form they will lie and say "yes."  When we know that they hadn't.  Anyway, perhaps this fellow volunteer of yours has experienced something similar to this in the past.
