1.5 Year old Pom doesnt like new pup Pom

Our 1.5 year old Pom, Bruce loves other dogs. He loves to play with my fathers germen Shepard and pretty much any other neighbor dog. He has no fear either! We decided that maybe he would like a friend to play with during the day, and we wanted a 2nd Pom anyway.

We took Bruce with us to look at the pup, and they seemed to like each other. So we brought the pup, Bazil, home. Now, albeit only 1 day later, Bruce seems to absolutely hate Bazil. He just runs away from him. Bazil attempts to play (and hump) Bruce, and Bruce just leaves. Bruce shows absolutely no aggression and never, ever has. Bruce loves to play and tease older dogs and even other puppies, but he does not seem to like Bazil at all.

Could it simply be Bruce doesn't like Bazil in "his" home? We have never had another dog in our apartment other then Bruce. Any ideas on what we can do to "teach" Bruce to play and not be afraid of the little guy?

    Thanks,

    Nick

I don't think it's a matter of him not "liking" him, he's simply trying to get away from rude puppy behavior.  (And in a pretty polite way, I might add..many dogs don't take kindly to the humping behavior) If you were at a party, and a stranger kept coming up to you and poking, poking, poking you, you'd get up and leave too[:D]

Start working on boundries with your pup, and make sure to crate/confine him sometimes so Bruce can have some time to himself without being harassed.  I'm sure in time, as the pup matures in behavior, they will be closer.

Hate was a bad word choice. You are right in that he seems to not enjoy the puppies behavior. What is funny is that Bruce was exaclty like Bazil. We have Bazil confined in the Kitchen and Bruce roams, so maybe a few days of that will be good. And we do not allow Bazil to hump Bruce, we just gently remove the Baz and say "no".

I guess we are just jumping to conclusions, But were worried about Bruce being so young and not wanting to play!

I will keep this updated as the weeks go on.

    Thanks!

Awww, congrats on you rnew pup[;)] Once everything calms down, they'll be the best of friends, you'll see. It takes some time and adjusting, he's not just visiting or having a friend over, this ones here to stay, and he knows it. Give it time, it'll be great!!

How old is Bazil?  Males are usually very patient with very young puppies, but once they become obnoxious, they must be taught the rules.  You can help but Bruce sounds like he's doing a good job on his own.  I wouldn't worry about it.  If he hated the pup you would know.

One day is too short a time to draw any conclusions. I'd be conderned if Bruce were beating Basil up but since he's just moving away it sounds like everything is fine so far. I agree that Bruce needs his own space (and plenty of attention).
