collar/harness for dogs with small heads?

    inspired by the harness post...

Shenzi has a small head and is a Houdini dog...she can slip out of a harness!  We have a collar on her now, but it's not that tight, she wears it for ID purposes.  I pretty much never put a leash on her because she can slip right out.  When we had a harness on her and I would walk her to the mailbox, she would try her very hardest to get away from me, hunch her shoulders and slip out of the harness to run back to the house.  I don't walk her b/c she hates to be walked (she doesn't like strangers outside...).  We have a very nice park right by our house with a walking path and grass, and it would be great to walk her (and myself!), but she just won't have it.  What type of collar can I put on her that won't hurt her but will keep her from slipping out and running away?

    thanks!

    A martingale, of course.

I'd REALLY work on those walking skills, though. You will more than likely end up needing to take her some place on a leash, and it's important that she's not freaking out.

When I got Teenie, she'd slip a harness. A martingale still works very well, for her, and is almost all I use, on either dog. They both have harnesses and flat collars, but I like the martingales the best.

I second both the martingale (I have one for my thick-necked dog) but also that the main problem here isn't your equipment but your dog's fear issues. Rather than just find something she can't get out of and drag her around, find a behaviorist in your area to help you work with her to overcome her fear of strangers. She can't be happy being afraid like that nor being denied good exercise because of her fear.

thanks, I'll look into the collar and both working on her fears.  She expends a lot of energy running around in the backyard and also when she goes to visit her bestest buddy Cujo (my mother in law's dog), but I'd like to be able to walk her.

it's also probably our fault she's like that b/c we leashed her when she was very young, but haven't done it in a long time...

    Martingale!!!!

I like the one with the chain insert -- make the collar fit just behind the skull so the D rings 'touch' but if the insert allows it to go TOO loose (you don't want it to be able to slip over the head AT ALL -- not with a Houdini -- you will adjust it on the neck before you remove it).

Martingale to avoid losing her.  And, this book to help with the fear issues:

Is she a small dog overall?  If so, you can use a harness this style.  Technically it is called a hug-a-dog harness but you can find them cheaper than that brand.  I make mine but I have some links to web sites for them.  PM me if you need them.
