Dog “leaking” urine

It sounds as though your dog might have a UTI to begin with.  If your girl does have incontinence, there are a couple of things that your vet will try.  My 2 y.o. pointer is leaky, we give her DES and it works beautifully for her. She had also had puppies and was spayed.   She gets only 1 mg, per week.  I tried to ween her off, but she was soon leaving spots on the floor, looking embarrassed and licking her self.  They might also try PPA (Phenolpropanolamine)  which also can work well, depending on your dog's problem.

    Good Luck.

What a beautiful shepherd girl you have there!  Congrats on adopting her.  I hope she feels better soon.

I concur; either a UTI or spay incontinence and both are fixable. Neat thing is that in order to diagnose spay incontinence they have to rule out UTI so it's a twofer; if it's not one it's the other.  I have an old female with incontinence - I call it leaky bitch disease. She's on DES.

The dog in my post is Sioux, who is spay incontinent.  She's on Proin, and does very well.  The classic sign of SI is when they get up urine-soaked after a nap, or when relaxed.  The sphincter is too weak to contain the urine, and it leaks.  Just tell your vet when it happens, what her water consumption is, and if there are any other symptoms.  I think she probably got dumped because her people thought she was just pee'ing in the house, and maybe didn't investigate - it happens.  But, the meds for this are inexpensive, just the initial visit to get it diagnosed, and rule out UTI.

Beautiful girl! And I would agree with others and have her checked. As for her weight she is overweight, and all I can say is work with your vet on that, females usually don't get much over 75lbs or should not, it depends on the muscle mass. A lean shepherd means less stress on the hips and elbows too.

    Keep us posted!

Most people feed kibble, though. Their dogs would drink more than our dogs do, right? 64 ounces *still* sounds like a whole lot, but 48 for a 105 pound, kibble fed dog didn't sound like so much, to me.

Sammy eats primarily kibble and probably drinks about 20-25 oz a day, with a bit extra that gets mixed in with his kibble.  He's about 45-50 lbs.  If we're out playing in the snow or something, then a bit more, perhaps.

Good luck with Tasha; I hope you find out what's wrong with her and make her better!

So, it wouldn't be that weird for a double sized dog to drink 48 ounces? I wasn't sure. Mine can drink a LOT some days, but that's usually after a good workout.

In other words what we're saying is a UTI could be the reason OR it could make spay-incontinence worse (if she was trying to hold a ton of water).

Jennie's right tho -- I home-cook so my dogs will drink less, but 64 oz is still a TON of water.

That is really a big dog so it doesn't sound like too much water to me but I don't know as much as the others on this board.  You have a beautiful dog and I like the name too (So does Tasha, my little pug-zu).  I hope everything turns out great!

XenoIII, How's Tasha?  Has she gotten to the vet yet?

She has an appointment for tomorrow morning. I cut back her water supply a bit and her accidents haven#%92t happened since, so I am hopeful.

Cool!  Please let us know how the visit goes.  Oh & give the lovely Tasha some belly rubs from me.

Be wary of restricting water to control urination. Urination is the sign of well functioning kidneys. Restricting water enough to reduce urination taxes the kidneys. And if she has a UTI the drinking eases the burning.

I don't like the sound of restricting water either.  I was never one to hold off on letting my kids have water before bed if they were thirsty to prevent accidents.  I would just take them to the bathroom in the middle of the night.  I hate being thirsty myself so I wouldn't do that to anyone, unless of course for some reason it was a necessary part of medical treatment.

Well I took her to the vet and she said it was spay incontinence. She gave me a pill, which is to be administered every three days. Hopefully that will help.   Thanks for your assistance, everyone.

I'm glad you got her to the vet.  Do you know what you were given to give Tasha?  Lucy was on DES & it worked great!
