Dirty sutures, all my fault!

    Dirty sutures, all my fault!

My little guy got neutered the day before yesterday, and the surgery area has seemed to really be bothering him. In an attempt to expedite the healing process, I in all my wisdom squeezed some vitamin E on the area, totally forgetting about my dog's hobby of digging and kicking in yard after going to the bathroom.

Now the incision area is covered with a nice, water-resistant paste of vitamin E and dirt. He's already on antibiotics for some gum disease, so hopefully infection isn't a huge concern? I tried gently spraying the area with water to no avail, but I don't want to scrub because he's still really tender around there.

Should I not worry about it, or try to do something? I feel like such an idiot. [:(]

Try a towel moistened with warm water, then a dilute solution of hydrogen peroxide.  After the area is dry, try putting some triple anti-biotic cream or neo-sporin on it.  Please, only after he's been outside and will be in for a while.

If you have a spray bottle, then you can mix down peroxide to about 1/2 peroxide & 1/2 water.  Just spray the suture line and let the peroxide clean what it will.  Gently pat it dry then apply a little neosporin on the suture line.  Don't worry to much about infection, all dogs suture lines get a little dirty from time to time.

Not a big deal but you should wipe it off with a damp cloth. At 24 hours 85% of animals have re-epithelialized and at 48 almost all have so not so bad to wipe it off with a damp cloth. In general, it's not a good idea to put vit E oil directly on an incision until it is a little more healed (like 7-10 days). What you can do if you really want to put something on it is plain old vit A and D ointment not oils. Neosporin or bacitracin are ok too, but there is a ~10% incidence of allergic rxns to the antimicrobial components of this ointments. I also would stay away from peroxide, it's irritating and you don't really need it since the wound probably is sealed and not infected :) Hope this helps!!!
