    Books.

This may sound silly.. and I apologize if I'm posting in the wrong place.. but I'm about to graduate high school and I really want to do something with animals after I graduate. At first I was wanting to be a vet assistant but I'm not sure I can do it. I just don't believe I'm smart enough. I'd love to learn about medicine and all that though because I've always had an interest for it. I just want to do something I love, and I've always loved all animals and wanted to do something involving them. Does anyone have any suggestions and are there any books that maybe will help me?

You have to believe in yourself!!  If you want it badly enough, you will find the way.  How about starting with your own vet and asking about different careers with animals.  Maybe he would let you shadow a vet tech for a day or two and see if you like it.

A vet tech is a nurse for animals.  You are taking courses in math, science, biology, radiology and many other health related courses, plus animal courses.  They have 2 yr. programs for this degree.  You then take a state board exam and become licensed just like an RN for humans.

It's good that you are thinking of your future now and ready to start researching what's out there that interests you!  Your computer is also a great tool to find out about careers with animals and how to go about getting there!

Vet assistant might be a wonderful place for you ... an awful lot of it isn't so much things like memorizing, but learning to work WITH the vet.  Like a legal secretary helps the boss 'make money' by doing certain tasks so the attorney doesn't have to -- the vet tech does the things that are more routine to free the vet up so he can be n the decision-making places.  You take your orders from the vet ... and a LOT of it is experiential.

Go for it -- it's one of those jobs that will always be 'needed' -- so it's a great fall back if you decide to go on to other things.  Most anything can be taught, and honestly an affinity for animals is something that you likely 'have' that will help you a great deal!!

Thanks a lot for the replies.. but I have been thinking about this a lot lately. Although it may seem out of reach, I think what I honestly want to do is open an animal rescue place with my best friend or maybe even my aunt. I've dreamed of wanting to do this years ago, but I guess I kind of put it aside since I thought it would be so expensive. This is what I've always wanted and if any of you have any advice on it, that would be so helpfull. What do I need to get this going, besides the money? Thanks so much.[:)]
