Can you change a dog's name?

When I adopted Georgia she came with her name. Thats what her original owners named her and what she responded to. In her foster home they used that name to train her so I thought I would keep it. At first I didn't like the name but it matched her well and after a while I didn't mind. I thought of other names but she didn't seem to lift her head to them the same way she did when I said "Georgia" I'm sure she would have caught on if I had changed it but to make everything easy on her I just left it the way it was. Her current owners also call her Georgia.

If I rescue a dog, can I change it's name?

Suuuure... My dog's original owners named her "Dizzy" (because she ran in circles around the tree she was chained to [&o]). Then my sister (who had her before me) named her Shenandoah, which was just too long and awkward, so she called her "Doah", at which point I started calling her Do-Do Bird (our last name is Bird), and pretty soon after that started, my sister renamed her (again) Cherokee, because she has always been obsessed with the fact that we're 1/16th Cherokee. [:D] Sooo, now I have Miss Cherky Jerky, which is fine by me.

You absolutely can change a dog's name.  To see how, visit www.clickerlessons.com and see the section on name recognition.  If you don't have a clicker, you can use your voice, and just say "yes" as a marker.

OMG did I just agree with Cesar Millan about something!?!? [sm=rotfl.gif]

When was that show?  I changed Maska's name four years ago - you can agree with me if it makes you feel better. [sm=devil.gif]

We changed our cockapoo's name when we adopted her.  Her name was Nana which is hideous for a dog.  We let our daughter name her.  Not sure if that was good idea since she named her Scruffy but that's ok.  We love our little Scruffy. The funny thing is that she still remembers Nana.  We bring it up every now and then and she perks her little head up like she knows it.

Dash is our Cocker Spaniel and he had that name at the shelter.  We kept it because he was so cute and we thought it suited him.  He likes to run laps around the yard as fast as he can and it is absolutely hilarious.  It took him a while to learn his name but he learned.  Scruffy learned her name right off the bat.

At the shelter they named him Bubba which, just *gag*. For some reason shelter workers feel absolutely compelled to name all stray scenthounds and scenthound mixes things like "Jethro" and "Elvis" and "Cletus".

My dog was a rescue too.  Some comedian at the shelter figured Bo Peep was a good name for a shepherd.  We thought Dakota was more diginified.
