Registered name question

    Registered name question

We're trying to come up with the registered name for our Samoyed puppy.
On the registration form the breeder put the kennel name first, which is standard.
But, there is no apostrophe-s after the kennel name: just the kennel name by itself.
What is the meaning of the 's in a registered name? Does it indicate ownership, or lineage?
Should we add on the 's before we complete the name on the form?

    Thanks!

Did the breeder ask you to choose a name related to a theme or alphabet letter?  Some folks do that to make it easier to identify litter mates etc.  The 's is a personal choice.  At this moment in time, you can use up the spaces on the form any way you wish.  Punctuation marks count as a space so that can limit your letters.

Some folks (those in competitive dog sport usually) pick a  "call name  (the one you use to call them)  that has a clear relationship to the registered name so it is easy to identify them in a catalog.

Example one of my favorites is Mapleruns Trouble With Tribbles  call name Spock.

Sometimes a dog's registered name sounds better without the 's at the end of a kennel name.  Particularly names that start with s, or have a word that ends with s.

For examples, I find that Rampant Dragon's Lair sounds better than Rampant's Dragon's Lair, and Vendetta Wildfyre Blue Skyy sounds better than Vendetta's Wildfyre Blue Skyy

You should be able to add the aposterphe and the s if you really want them, but you don't have to, and presumably the breeder would prefer you didn't. Mal's breeder's kennel name is Tairis, so she doesn't use the 's because it gets (more) difficult to pronounce. :P

I love thinking of registered names but hate deciding on them. Mal's papers just went in this week with Tairis Big Damn Hero on them.

    Okay, rules of English again:

If you want to show possession, then you do put the apostrophe. "Maplerun's Big Giant Doggie."

However the possessive of a name ending in S has ONLY the apostrophe, and you do not pronounce another S. So "Tairus' Big Giant Doggie" would be correct, NOT "Tairus's."

You never, ever use an apostrophe to show there is more than one thing. Dogs, horses, hippos, NOT dog's, horse's and hippo's. More than one thing, no apostrophe. If you are showing it belongs to something, you do use an apostrophe.

Thank you! This has been a Public Punctuation Announcement! [:D]

to bad spaces are more of an issue than punctuation rules when it comes to the AKC [;)]

Pwca, I love Firefly.  Jayne is awesome

    Mal: No Grenades Jayne
    Jayne: Awww!

    Mal: She has a name?
    Jayne: Yeah...I call her Vera!!

    HAHA, I love that gun.

    Ha!  I LOVE Firefly!!  Shiny!

I named Tux for his ILP and he's SCD's Black Tie Affair since he belonged to Second Chance Dobes.  [:D]  I also had enough spaces to do that ... that isn't always the case depending on the name.  (I don't know how many characters you can have for full AKC registration but when I registered it was 28 for an ILP and it's down to 25 now...)

Aha!  Thanks Stef!  I think you just hit upon the solution to the "trouble" we've been having coming up with a registered name for Caleb- I'll use our initials!  BTW- I love Tux's name- both registered and call.

You're welcome!  Some people with shorter names used "Second Chance's..." but because Tux's name was longer I couldn't.  Wes is from a shelter - his name for UKC will be "Stef's Man In Black" since he's named for Westley from the Princess Bride and Westley was of course the "Man in Black". *grinning*  I'm a dork. Thanks!  I really fell in love with it and had it picked before we brought him home.  *laughing*
