Question About Boarding

    Question About Boarding

Hi everyone Raja is going to be boarded this weekend the 5th-8th.  She has never been boarded before, the kennel I choose has pretty large kennels 5ft. by 20 ft. and is an indoor outdoor place. There is no one there 24 hours a day, only during business hours.

I am a bit worried because she has never boarded, and even in her crate she goes nuts scratching and barking and trying to get out, despite our efforts to make her like her crate.
She is also very hyper, should I be worried about boarding her???
Also, I am bringing her kong, blanket, food and some treats..anything else I should bring? Thanks in advance!!!

I think its normal to worry the first time.  I have only boarded once and worried myself too much.  My pup is only 9 months and has lots of energy and is used to
atleast one long walk a day.  I was able to purchase extra play times and walks so that helped some.  You may want to see what your facility offers.

To be honest, I would try to find a facility with 24 hour staffing, even if it's only an overnight person who sleeps there.  What if there was a fire?  I know it's easy for me to talk, because I don't have to board my dogs with strangers, but I would want coverage, plus I would want to take my dog in for a "trial day" first, to make sure that the dog will be ok in the kennel, since you say that this dog is hyper, etc.  [sm=2cents.gif]

I have boarded the Ode a couple of times.  Based on my experience, I would say, take your dog to the facility then go enjoy your weekend.  Everything will be fine.

I live in Granite Bay and have done some checking on local boarding.  Here's some links in our area that you might want to look at.  I haven't ever used any of them (yet), so I'm not recommending them, but they're a start.  I personally wouldn't board my dogs unless there was 24 hour staffing, and especially if you know your dog has anxiety problems when kenneled.  In the past (with a different dog) I used Greenback Pet Resort and it was okay.  My dog had runny stools and seemed lethargic (depressed?) for a few days after though, but she also had separation anxiety.  At least they have the 24 hour pet hospital right next door though and I liked that.  Their kennels are also indoor/outdoor runs, so that was a must too.  I'd offer to watch Raja for you, but one of my girls isn't always friendly with other dogs [&:]

If the place your going to board your dog has a day-care servcie I would try that a few times. If no other reason but to get her more familiar with her suroundings and people that work there - also they will be more familiar with your dog and know what he/she wants and needs...

As for the 24 hour attendant - I was concnered about this when we boarded Presley but I quickly realized she is at home by herself when we're at work and that she will have other dogs there. My wife was so worried one day she wanted to call (it was our honeymoon, time differance, cost to call, etc. so I put the kibosh on that). It took all afternoon for her to stop obsessing about it (Actually it took 3 Rum Runners ;poolside but who's counting). Long story short, when we picked her up she was very happy to see us when we picked her up and the Kenel tech's said she was fantastic - she had the best time, it was little vacation for her too.And my wife wished she didn't riun a whoele afternoon worrying about it.

Go on vacation and have some fun - your entitled...

Hi everyone sorry it took me so long to reply back, Jode88 yes the kennel Raja will be staying at also has the exta play time its $10 a day for extra play time, and brushing etc. So at least she will have a little extra play time.
Spiritdogs, I was looking to get a place that has someone there 24 hours a day but both the kennels that have someone there 24 hrs were full and one we have taken our dogs to and had a bad expirence with, I checked it out yesterday and it looks well run and clean, It is actually primarilly a training facility but they also do boarding.
Cakana, thanks for the offer to watch Raja that was very nice of you! I checked into Classic Kennels and it was pretty dirty and they tend to catter to dogs that are small so I figuered that would not be good, I actually live very close to Greenback Vet and Pet Resort, our dogs ahve gone to Greenback when we have had emergencies before. We boarded our other dogs there last summer and our dogs came back with urine on them when the kennel attendant said they had all gone out 3 times a day. Plus they came back with ticks, they were on Frontine not Frontine Plus at the time because we don't have ticks so that did not make me too happy. I am trying to be optimistic and think everthing will go good but I don't know if that is stupid and something bad will happen. I will see if there are any other 24hr kennels that still have openings.
Presley, haha and I am thinking that I may be like your wife and call too! And not stop worrying. No unfortuenetly they do not have a day-care I could try out. I asked if she could be boarded by another dog, not in the same kennel but one next to her, since she is used to being with our other dogs, they said she would be surrounded by two other dogs on either side of her, which I am hoping will help.

I will try calling today to see if in the neiboring cities  have a kennel with a 24hr attendant.

I don't know if this holds true in your area, but down here many vet clinics board dogs as well.  Have you asked your vet to see if they board?  I know that most clinics have someone there 24 hours a day.  Just a thought.

Wherever you board make sure you show them how to stuff the kong if that is what you desire.  Also bring stuff to stuff the kong with (if they use new treats you may have to deal with diarhea).  Any time my dogs stay, I bring 2 blankets each, a kong with treats to stuff it with, one squeeky to a piece, and their food, and food bowls.

Thanks for the info on Classic Kennels.  It helps to hear that and I won't bother with them.  Greenback wasn't a top choice for me either, but I'd probably use them in a pinch.  The Wag place looks pretty fancy, but probably pretty pricey too.  I'd love to hear where you end up going and how it turns out.  One reason we don't travel very much is because we haven't found a kennel we felt comfortable enough with.  My DH actually worries more than I do and he'd be the one calling to check up on them.  For us, having someone come stay at our place would be the very best alternative.  Good luck in finding a place you can feel comfortable enough with to enjoy your vacation [:)]

Bevolasvegas - The vet Raja regulary goes to does not offer boarding and the emergency vet we use has only 4ft by 5ft cages which would be very small for her, and they keep the boarding dogs in the same area as dogs that are recovering and I don't know if there would be dogs crying or in pain after surgeries.

Also I am bringing her Kong with her, but I was unsure if they would fill it, or if it would take too much time for them, I'll have to ask tommarow about it. Aslo they said they would provide a dog bed but I am bringing her own because she only sleeps on it at night, so it will remind her of home.

Cakana- I decided to call around and None of the kennels have someone there 24hrs a day, even in Sacramento, I also thought that Greenback Pet Resort did but I even called them because it had been a while since we boarded with them and they said no that no kennels in this area have someone there 24hrs a day because the dogs will bark...sounded a bit wierd to me, but that was her answer.
I looked on the Wag Hotel website and its about $45 a day for a dog her size, a bit pricey!!! Elite kennels is $18 a day which is resonable.   I will definetly let you know how it goes at Elite. Its in West Sacramento so its a bit of a drive but hopefully it will worth it! They have a website if you wanted to take a look [linkhttp://elite-dogs.com/]http://elite-dogs.com/[/link]

I work at a vet clinic.  I am a vet tech so I don't deal with our boarders routinely except for a quick walk through to check everyone in the morning & evening. (We have kennel staff that care for & play with the boarders throughought the day.)  I am sure that almost any boarding facility would be more than willing to stuff a kong for Raja, so that she will not be bored.  I clinic has kongs on hand, that we use for all of the boarders.  We just sterilize them between uses.  We would rather the dogs boarded with us be entertained as much as possible.

Thats great to hear, I was guessing that they would do it because it would keep her alot more content, but wasn't sure. Plus thats the only toy I can leave her with because when she gets bored or is alone she will chew and any other toy I am afraid she will swallow and choke on.
