Some good news from the vet!

Some good news from the vet!

Well, Buster and I found ourselves back at the vet because he was in so much pain because of his slipped disc in his neck.  This time was pretty bad.  Whenever it hurt him, he would let out a long painful scream.  I got him to the vet asap (this is our new vet) and she did a total overview on him.  She checked him from head to toe.  He wasn't too happy, in fact he was totally stressed, but he did fine.  He doesn't nip or bite, he just squirms and tries to escapes the hands of the stranger touching him all over.

When she finally finished, she tells me that, yep, it's his neck, and seems to be only his neck that is hurting.  I also had bloodwork done, since he is 12 and hasn't had that done.  She gave me some meds to help his pain and would call the next day with the blood work results.  He was to stay in bed, total bedrest.  No furniture, few stairs, raised food and water.  OK, sounds easy.  The next day I got the results back...everything is great.  No diseases, no problems.  [sm=clapping%20hands%20smiley.gif]  [sm=dance.gif]

So, now how do I get a dog who is feeling years younger because of the meds to calm down?  He is acting like a completely new dog!  I know it won't last and I know he needs his rest, but he just won't sit down and relax.  Silly puppy. [:)]  But, I'm so relieved that everything's ok and my baby is doing well (besides the neck thing, and the deafness which really isn't a problem).

Please, it is very important to keep him quiet...I would get a crate and keep him confined except for potty and feeding breaks.  It just won't heal on it's own with activity.  My Biscotti actually had surgery for this, although she was still a young dog.

I would use a roomy crate. I have a dane sized crate in my basement for emergencies like this. I give it the works: bed,  comforter, toys, chews, water and food, any thing else necessary

What if getting him into the crate is a whole other issue.  When I was younger my dad had borrowed a crate from someone to try it out, we couldn't even get him into it.  We tried the treat thing and anything else we could think of, but he wouldn't have anything to do with it. [&:]  I think now trying to get him into one would just not work.

How about a whole yummy treat filled frozen Kong!?

I'm very glad Buster has a good bill of health other then the disc/neck thing and that he's feeling so much better with some pain management!

    Exercise pen?

I'd also ask the vet about decreasing the pain pills.  I want just enough to take the edge off, but not enough so the dog feels great.  A little bit of pain may make him slow down a bit.  Obviously nobody wants their dog in pain but you (and your vet) need to weigh overdoing it versus a little pain.

That's got to be tough to get him to take it easy when the pain med is making him feel better. It looks like kong-time, or something he can do that doesn't require running around at 30 mph.

Yeah, I have been doing kongs to try to keep him down for longer periods.  And with me at work pretty much everyday keeps him down for most of the day.  And the meds only last for two weeks, decreasing as time goes.  I talked to my supervisor at work and she is going to let me borrow her crate to see how he does in it, then I'll decide if I want to buy one.

An exercise pen is a good idea too!  I'll have to look in to something.  Thanks for all the great advice.[:D]
