What about adopting from pet stores?

I've never seen dogs for adoption at PetCo or PetSmart..??? I've only seen cats.

    Is that just mee?

I think it's a great idea. The idea is that you're "adopting" not "buying" and you are saving a homeless life, and getting a forever friend.

There are resctrictions, just like most adoption agencies.

The point is, Petco/smart aren't BREEDING to SELL. They adopt out HOMELESS animals and team up with local Rescues/SPCA's/AC's

It gets the word out more. Some people don't go to shelters. But people do go to the pet store, and while they're there, they happen to see an adorable kitten for adoption that they fall in love with.

Sherman Animal Care & Control has a mobile adoption ever Saturday at the Petco, except for the Saturday before Christmas, to discourage the Christmas Puppy Syndrome. I don't think they microchip. Cost of a dog, regardless of breed or size, is $44, which includes adoption, vacc, and spay/neuter at a supporting vet.

PetSmart in McKinney, Texas hosts adoptions from Lezee's Legacy and ARK-Texas, no kill rescues. Their adoption fees range from $150 to $200 but this includes the necessary vet and medical care that makes them totally adoptable. Some of their dogs are okay with any pet, others are best suited to a 1 pet home with a trained owner.

That's about what the municiple pound in Maryland where we got our first two dogs charges. Their main goal is to get the dogs out the door, because if they don't, those dogs don't have much time. Conrad was one day from his deadline when we adopted him. There's a pound in Ohio across the border from where I live that has an adoption fee of $15. You don't get much for that (all the vetting and chipping and neutering is up to you) but in that shelter a dog is lucky if they can keep it around for more than a week before putting it down. The more desperate the shelter, the lower the fee's going to be.

Tell me about it. This last summer, we rescued Jade from the streets. Literally, I plucked her out of a friend's tree, after her and Shadow had a good introduction at the friend's house. (Neutral territory for him to see if he could be friends or thought she was lunch. He grew up with a cat and has played with a neighbor's loose cats, so chances were good.) Anyway. Initial vet visit for health and shots was around $50. Her spay in October (?) was $90. I don't regret it but it would have been cheaper to adopt her from the shelter, had she been there already. The only downside of that shelter is that they charge $44 dollars for a surrender of even a stray if it is from outside their city limits. I'm not sure why that is like that but that's how it is.

WOW, I'm getting really jealous of all these cheap prices.  You cannot get a dog spayed here for under $200 and thats for the smallest size dog, the prices go up for larger dogs.  And an initial vet visit with vaccines would be around $80 at least.
