help for a friend -- dog bit child

It's a sad situation all around.  I think if you have kids and dogs that the children need to be taught to allow the dog personal space, and that the dog should have a crate/bed to go to as it's own space when it wants alone time.  Most importantly, children should be taught that the dog is off limits in these areas.  . Particularly small breeds, who might feel overwhelmed, and especially a dog with a known painful condition. Likely the dog gave several warnings before the bite that just weren't picked up on.

I'm having a real hard time understanding this whole situation.

When I was little, i crawled on my dogs, hugged and squeazed them, dressed them up, and never ONCE was growled or nipped at, nor were teeth ever beared. One of the dogs was a Pit Bull.

I just can't image this would happen? I don't understand because I don't know. But I am thinking back to my own situation, and at 6 months, I was on the floor crawling all over my dogs, and pulling on tails and ears, and screaming loudly because they excited me (LOL!!) and I guess that's because they were raised right.

I guess I didn't learn MY boundaries, but the dogs obviously did.

I don't think it would be fair to the dog to get rid of it. Why can't they work on this???
Training, and seeking a behaviorist is their best bet.

bohhall - I got the point that you got your dog as a puppy about 12 years ago as she is 13 now. Has a behavior problem. Do a new post on this subject as people are addressing the old post. I wish I could help you out. Your dog in my mind should not be put to sleep. Help is there somewhere. But don`t let your dog around the 18 month old at a this point. Please start a new post and you will get good advice from many people here to help you out.

its been two weeks since the original post, any word on the situation with the dog?
 
i dont have anything vital to add here, its pretty much all been said, just curious if you know what happened.
