    dog bites

i just found this [linkhttp://www.trivia-library.com/a/9-dog-breeds-that-bite-the-most.htm]list of the top breeds that bite[/link]. i dont know how much merit i put into, and i'm guessing the results are based on only the bites that are reported, so in that sense i doubt it is very accurate. but interesting none the less.

i was on that site finding out the meaning behind "dont look a gift horse in the mouth", and discovered it has alot of interesting info. including the above.

Yeah, one has to remember that a lot of people just guess at the breed.

Interesting, though. Forgive my ignorance - what is an Italian Bulldog?

ergh. maybe it's accurate, but i still don't like the list. and where the hell are the chiwawas?? i know there are no big dogs in beijing (anymore[:(]) but i see them bite people all the time.

There are few little dogs on the list for the simple fact those bites are more likely to be cared for at home, not in the ER or doctors office.  Department of Health statistics are based on required doctors reporting of specified illnesses and accidents.

yeah.. does make sense.. though i knew a girl who had to get stiches after she was bitten by a dachshund. in fact i was bitten by the same dog. had to go to the hospital 5 days in a row, cause the damn thing wasn't vaccinated [:@]

but yeah.. these lists still suck.
(aren't i making intelligent statements. lol)

I think that list is suspect.  Golden Retrievers are almost always listed, and I don't see them anywhere there.
Bite lists are compiled from various sources - dept of health, ER reports, ACO's.  And, they are skewed by the fact that some breeds are more popular than others.  Some list the dogs that bite most often, others list the dogs that kill most often.  And, you must remember that most bites occur from dogs the victim knows and, therefore, least likely to report.

where are the jack russells? around here, they are the breed most likely to bite people, by far.  Then come the golden retrievers and labs, simply because they are the most common breeds, and are often ill-bred and ill-trained and under-supervised (but it's a golden! they don't bite! I can let it run wild without worry...).

Where the heck are the labs?  They are the number one biters in our area.

ETA: Anyone know what an Italian Bulldog is?
    • Gold Top Dog
    Here you go, Italian Bulldog.
Looks like a dog in a cartoon from way back, can't remember which one[:D]

I'm suprised there are no cockers. A while back I read that the two biggest were labs and cockers. Labs just because
here, atleast, they outnumber any other dogs 3 to 1, and they can be so rambunctious, and cockers because lots of times, they are either the sweetest dogs I know, overweight with a ton of health problems, or downright vicious.

There is no way they can accurately measure dog bites by breed. There are many of those list and they are all very different.

Here is the Humane Society of the United States response:

Q: Which dogs most commonly bite? Are some breeds more likely to bite than others?
A: The breeds most commonly involved in both bite injuries and fatalities changes from year to year and from one area of the country to another, depending on the popularity of the breed. Although genetics do play some part in determining whether a dog will bite, other factors such as whether the animal is spayed or neutered, properly socialized, supervised, humanely trained, and safely confined play significantly greater roles. Responsible dog ownership of all breeds is the key to dog bite prevention.
