Our Pom is eating the cat litter..What do I do?

    Hi everyone!
Thanks ahead of time for any advice. Lately we have noticed that there seems to be an odd amount of litter outside of lola the cats litter box. I just passed it away to her not cleaning off her paws. Well this morning I looked down and caught Keiichi with his head stuck in the litter box.
I'm thinking this might have been going on for awhile because the week before last we spent hundreds of dollars getting him to stop having so many tummy troubles.
So my question is....for those of you who have cats..how do you keep your dog out?

Do a search on the forum . . . there's lots of info.  For starters, put the cat box up at a level where the cat can get to it, but the dog can't.  Another option is to turn the box with the opening facing the wall.  Leave only enough of a gap for the cat to get in and out.  There are more options than this, but these are two quick ideas.

    What a cutie she is!
I hate to tell you, but she's probably not eating teh litter, but rather the other stuff in there!  My Pom thought these were delicacies, also.  I gated the room with the box.  The cats can jump over and she stayed out.  If she's having stomach problems I'd go this route rather than try to train her right now.  You want to make sure she's not eating any more.

    Good luck!

So your cutie has discovered the joy of snacking on kitty links? Am so sorry. I was going to suggest either cutting a cat door into the door of the room where you keep the tasty treats or using a baby gate, but since I am guessing your canine is about cat size that probably won't work. What about getting a small table and placing the litter box on it.

We have had our pup for 6 months now and never noticed a problem ...til the other day.  He came out to the living room and spit something out of his mouth, it was cat poo.  We have one of those litter mate automatic scooping cat boxes so that helps a lot.  He happen to get his prize before the scooping started.
We also have a cat door on the laudry room door but we rarely had it closed...now we close the laundry room door and the cats use the cat door.

Over here we call them Cat Crunchies.  My dogs find them outside in our yard, because there apparently is no leash law for Cats.  Grr.  Anyway, my friend, who has indoor cats, puts here litter box in a place where the dogs can't fit.  However both of her cats are about twice the size of a Pom, so if I were you, I would put the box up on a sidetable or something that the pup can't reach. Good luck.

Yup.  Kitty treats are just irresistible to most dogs - containment is the only way to go.  I have one auto scooping box in a room on the main floor of the house and it has dual cat doors - two lanes or one in and one out. I also have all the kitty feeding stations in that room.  The door to the basement also has a kitty door in it and they hav three covered pans down there - DH built a sort of hip high platform for the boxes with steps up for the cats - I have a Litter Locker there and with the boxes being at a sort of working height for me, scooping is a breeze - no bending or squatting!
