I'm not sure if you meant the human children bit as a cannibalistic joke or if you were implying that I view pets as substitutes for children, which I don't.
FWIW, when the goddaughter comes over and Shadow is too rambunctious for her (she has big dog fear issues) I put him in the back yard.
Just the same, my pet is my companion animal. And I will not eat him. But I did ask the question to see if everyone is so agreeable with eating dogs if they could eat their own pet. Let's up the stakes. Say your are diabetic and your dog could smell your blood sugar dropping and alerted you to it, i.e., saved your life. Now, can you eat your dog.
I have certain standards that I will hold myself to. One is to not engage in cannibalism, and the other is not to eat an animal such as my pet that has been a member of my family, so to speak. I will starve first, such is the strength of my resolve. As I pointed out in the "how are we like our pets" thread, I am loyal to a fault. All the joking aside, I would rather die and have the marker say "He was loyal."
And I have no problems eating a cow or a chicken, whether or not they are smarter or not. And I can logically agree with the debate that any animal can be food or a pet and, for some, both. If that makes me a contradictory mess, fine, I can live with that.
FWIW, I would not be caught in Katrina. I would do like the people in Florida do. Listen to the hurricane warning and get out. Pack up DW, the pets, and me and there's not actually anyone big enough to stop me. So, for me, the situation of having to eat one's pet is hypothetical. Suitable for an interesting debate but, at the end of the day, it is against my personal moral code to eat a pet.
