Is it really that wrong to eat dogs and cats?

What if it were a strange, stray homeless guy?  OR what if you had to choose between the homeless guy and the stray dog?

If I was starving....it would probably depend on who had the most meat on their bones...(joking or am I???)
Honestly how can you relate a dog to a human? I love dogs, cats and other animals, (except bats...eeeee) but you can not relate dogs to humans....

and for a troll...this guy got 7 bloody pages!!!

    oh hell...i might also reply..

if you were ever hungry enough, you might eat just about anything...for those who have not eaten(not by choice)in a few days, you would be surprised when your instinct to live comes in...

;People have resorted to cannibleism in dire situations.and if you dont think that your dog would eat you if it could, and was out of its mind with hunger, than your probably not bieng truthful with yourself..lol

animals have been eating animals since the beginning of time...we are just another animal...and i myself just love a big, juicy tender steak...i have also been involved in the process, from beginning to end ,of putting food on my table...from deer to cows to chickens to fish..

Homeless guy or dog? Whichever one had the most meat on it. [;)] But that's just me.

Meh, it's all a matter of perspective. Alot of people place other species beneath humans. Alot of people see everything as equals. I'm one of those people. I don't place humans as any more important than any other species, or any less.

I'm not sure if you meant the human children bit as a cannibalistic joke or if you were implying that I view pets as substitutes for children, which I don't.

FWIW, when the goddaughter comes over and Shadow is too rambunctious for her (she has big dog fear issues) I put him in the back yard.

Just the same, my pet is my companion animal. And I will not eat him. But I did ask the question to see if everyone is so agreeable with eating dogs if they could eat their own pet. Let's up the stakes. Say your are diabetic and your dog could smell your blood sugar dropping and alerted you to it, i.e., saved your life. Now, can you eat your dog.

I have certain standards that I will hold myself to. One is to not engage in cannibalism, and the other is not to eat an animal such as my pet that has been a member of my family, so to speak. I will starve first, such is the strength of my resolve. As I pointed out in the "how are we like our pets" thread, I am loyal to a fault. All the joking aside, I would rather die and have the marker say "He was loyal."

And I have no problems eating a cow or a chicken, whether or not they are smarter or not. And I can logically agree with the debate that any animal can be food or a pet and, for some, both. If that makes me a contradictory mess, fine, I can live with that.

FWIW, I would not be caught in Katrina. I would do like the people in Florida do. Listen to the hurricane warning and get out. Pack up DW, the pets, and me and there's not actually anyone big enough to stop me. So, for me, the situation of having to eat one's pet is hypothetical. Suitable for an interesting debate but, at the end of the day, it is against my personal moral code to eat a pet.

it was a joke, implying i would eat my kids before my dog, no reference towards you in any way.

i could reasonably say i wouldn't be caught in a hurricane either, geographically impossible. so it is highly unlikely i would be in that situation and faced with such a decision. disaster wise i suppose we could get snowed in, but that is why we have a supply of non-perishables.

ETA in that event it may even be wiser to keep the dog alive, not just out of my own perspective but for warmth.

Instead of rewriting my view, I will say I agree with Ratsicles.

i think that the eatting of any animal is ok...as long as they are raised humanely, cared for and killed quick
when i was growing up we had our own chicken and pigs that we raised for food
they had warm shelter, losta food and were cared for
when my dad would butcher them he would make it as stress-free and quick as he could
i have had pigs that were smarter then most dogs, my neighbors have a guard-bull( they biggest black beastie you ever did see that loves apple pie and sleeping under the ladies kitchen window =), i learned to ride on a goat that used to babysit us and watch tv in the house when we could sneak her in, i have a pet chicken that rolls over like a dog and comes running/flying when i call, i have mini horses that think there dogs and greet me at the gate
all these animals are ones that people eat, but once you get to know them they can be just as precious as a dog or cat
so moral of my story is any animal no matter intelligence or species deserves to be treated with respect and dignity even if it is only a "food" animal

I had chickens a while back-three and I would never eat any of them even if I was about to die. I'm not kidding, I had made a bond with them and they were my pets. I cryed when our family dog killed them. Dogs are man's best friend in the US and to think of these beloved like family members to be abuse rips us apart.
