    urgent -excessive panting

just posted in the health section Bugsy's girlfriend (13mo old golden) started excessive non stop panting this week  She went to the vet yesterday who said bacterial pneumonia or asthma (xrays taken) She's not responded to pneumonia treatment
anyone know how to get more info re bacterial pneumonia or asthma?  any other ideas?
her energy is near normal but she is really struggling to breathe

Your vet should be able to distinguish between pneumonia and asthma via x-ray. Asthma doesn't really have any significant changes on x-ray usually and symptoms will respond almost immediately to bronchodilators. Pneumonia usually takes a few days of ABX/Antifungals (depending on the bug) to improve but if the pup's not getting better it's time to get back in the car and see the vet again :)

Oh and what are they treating her with and how long has she been on it???

again not my dog but the vet apparently said (and showed to my friend) the xray showing the lung problem
she is on rimadyl and antibiotics for about 48 hrs - if all is the same she will go back to the vet tomorrow and they mentioned giving her a steroid shot
Its all very concerning - my friend is an experienced dog owner and is struglling to find info on this problem and never seen anything like it
I'm just trying to gather some info for her

Sounds like the vet's doing the right thing[:)] It's always a little scary when our babies are sick!!!

There's a nice explanation of pneumonia, with causes, treatments, and at home care, at maravistavet.com.
Dog flu can also cause pneumonia - there's info on it at the AVMA website.
Tell your friend not to be afraid to seek additional help from a holistic vet, too.  (AHVMA has listings)

When Outdoorschik first adopted Oliver (this was way way previous to hip dysplasia and all that) he was one mega sick little pup and had bacteria pneumonia.  It took a LONG while to heal -- she did steam tents with him in the bathroom and a bunch of stuff.

Slippery elm can be super helpful -- that's a good anti-inflammatory for the lungs.  You can make a good cough syrup from honey + lemon + teas or two of slippery elm (w/just enough water to make the slippery elm into gelatin).  You can literally give them all you want/need to.

Specifically tell your friend to find out if the vet wants the cough suppressed or NOT.  That's a big huge deal and it will be dependant on what the individual situation is.

That above recipe will NOT suppress a cough -- it will simply help reduce the inflammation and make the dog more comfortable so it avoids excessive coughing, but it's not going to prevent them coughing something up that needs to come up.

If there is fever, you can give chammomile tea -- that will help both reduce fever systemically AND it will help the tummy (cos all the meds will upset the stomach).  However, skip the chammomile if they have the dog on prednisone to reduce the lung inflammation.  The cough syrup won't react badly with pred.

Another good cough soothant is licorice (the black kind) -- just don't overdo it because it can up the blood pressure in great quantities.  But it is very soothing and usually they really like it.

an update- the pup is still panting non-stop during the day.  Rimadyl didn't change anything so owner stopped giving it to her.  She slept better sat night so may be the anti-biotic is working.  My friend says that her energy seems fine and her mood is fine.  She was going to dose her up with benadryul and see if that changed anything as the vet said it could be asthma.
No news on whether that worked or not
Its pretty amazing as the pup is a purebred golden from an excellent breeder and has been very healthy up till now (she's 14 mos old - I htink they got her at 8-10 weeks old)

Could it be an allergic reaction to some allergen - that she comes into direct contact with, like household cleaners or aromas, bedding, crate, food, plant or other poisons - thereby causing asthmatic symptoms?  Sounds new, anything new around the house or pup?

How is your friend's Golden today?

last spoke to her on Tuesday evening and no change - normal energy, mood, constant panting.  Benedryl didn't change anything and the anti biotic didn't seemingly change anything so I'm not sure where she is up to today.  I'm sure she will have taken her back to the vet if the antibiotic is finished and she is the same
my dog thinks we are mean because he hasn't seen his girlfriend in AGES!
