ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Rock Hill Police Department launched an investigation to find out who has been dumping dead dogs in a wooded area on the south end of town.

Last week, residents along Redwood Road in Rock Hill complained that dead dogs were being dumped on in the nearby woods.

Neighbors said the dogs stayed there for weeks becoming a health hazard. They wanted to know who is responsible for removing the dogs' remains.

When reporter Greg Suskin brought veterinarian and Humane Society Chairman Robert Chappell out to Redwood Road six days ago, he was sure some of the carcasses he saw were pit bulls that were fought to the death.

"People who are fighting dogs, or a fighting ring, they are taking people's dogs off the streets, using them to train their dogs, and then dumping the bodies there," said Chappell.

He said finding more than 15 in one place is almost unbelievable.

"It's just beyond, beyond common sense," said Chappell.

The animals were scattered around the rural road near an industrial park. Some of the dogs are now just bones wrapped in chains, and plastic bags, while others were dumped only days ago.

Sophia Caldwell drove by Tuesday afternoon and said sights like this hurt the image of the whole town.

"This is part of our town. So it is a reflection on us when it looks this bad," she said.

The area looks worse on Tuesday although no new animals have been dumped. Several couches and pieces of furniture were recently dumped.

Chappell is spear-heading the effort to clean up the mess and keep a watch on the road.

The city of Rock Hill owns the land and will soon send work crews to clean it up.

The York County Humane Society is offering a $1,000 reward for any information that will help find the person dumping these animals. If you know anything, please call (803) 802-0902.

I hope they catch those responsible for this madness.  Its too bad they couldn't catch them red handed as they were dumping those poor babies.  How sad!

I'd just as soon put the offenders in a swarmin mass of sharks. It's entirely possible that the offenders aren't even from Rock Hill. I bet if they brought over Dog, the Bounty Hunter, from Hawaii, he could find them quickly. Considering what he's been through and the prison time he did for the motorcycle club he was in, finding these pieces of trash would be a cake-walk for him.

There is an off leash island a  local bay called Fiesta Island.  Last summer someone's two dogs ran off and were missing for several weeks.  One dog was never recovered.  The other was found buried on the island with only its head sticking out of the earth.  Sick sick sick
