Pet Stores Pull Puppies After Parasite Found

    POSTED: 3:48 pm EST March 29, 2006
ATLANTA -- Officials in Georgia have ordered six Atlanta-area pet stores to stop selling dogs, after more than 130 puppies tested positive for a parasite that can be transmitted to humans.
The six stores are part of The Pet Company. In three of the stores, every puppy tested was infected with the parasite.
Officials said the Windsor, N.Y.-based company will be dealt with "very harshly."
They learned about the problem after a woman bought an $800 puppy and ended up with about $900 in vet bills.
After the complaint, officials found found 138 of the 151 puppies tested at the six Pet Company stores were infected.
The stores can continue to sell other animals, but all of their dogs were ordered quarantined Tuesday.

I would never buy a dog from a pet store anyway but this gives me yet another reason.

I wish they'd mention what the parasite was.

Hopefully they won't ever sell puppies again; but, you'd think they'd be looking a tad deeper... like at the puppy mill producing them.

They may be looking at that, but it probably won't make the news - that's the sad part.
Yet another reason NOT to buy from pet stores...

Most likely it's giardiasis....it's an intestinal parasite transmitted to humans. I know someone who had it, she was sick for months before a doctor finally diagnosed what it was.

At a mall pet shop in Massachusetts not far from me, puppies contracted it, and so did several employees...they had to shut the pet shop down for a while. What's really awful is that parents typically bring small children into the mall, and often let them pet or touch the puppies when they have them out in those observation rooms. The puppies typically have been sitting in their own feces in their cage, so it's pretty easy for a kid to get infected, since kids are always putting their hands in their mouths.

I tell everyone who will listen to me that story, in an attempt to keep them away from pet shops and "impulse" bought puppies!

My new rescue has giardia and all my dogs are receiving treatment.  So far (fingers crossed) no one in my family has contracted it.  It is very contagious!

Hopefully one day there will be no pet stores that sell dogs....  We can hope, can't we?

I wish they would shut more of these places down....

I fostered 2 Scottie puppies that came from a backyard breeder in Iowa this last fall... they had Giardia and Mange...

Guess what... out of doing rescue for 5 years and never getting anything... I got Giardia from them. And Im a neat freak and bathed them when they came in and got the to the vet the next day....

One week later and well...guess what... yip... not the kind of diet plan you would want.....I was on the very same med's that we were treating them with....  I feel for anyone who got sick from those petstore dogs..and the poor puppies....

    Makes me sick....

I got giardia from drinking water in Taos. When it rains up there the groundwate flows into the city water and contaminates it....

It's pretty nasty. We're talking uncontrollable bloody diarrhea folks. Really, really awful.
