Ok you guys, I'm dropping in real quick to ask for any ideas you can give!
There's a new group in my town. They are just starting out at this time. Their goals are:
To incorporate sterilization IMMEDIATELY when an animal shows up at the shelter.
To get legislature involved.
To educate the public. Namely, school kids.

The locals don't see anything wrong with letting mutts run rampant through the neighborhoods to breed. Dogs are always loose, shelters are overflowing, and there are still twice-weekly killing sprees in the pounds. Still, everyone has a dog who is pregnant and doesn't see anything wrong with it.
Many many pure-breeds aren't coming from good breeders. In fact, anyone I know who wanted a dog with papers either got it from a backyard breeder or a pet store. They just don't know any better.
The problem is the lack of education here. People are kept in the dark about a lot of things. Local shelters and pounds seem to never get publicity like they should, and the volunteers are at their wits end. I've seen the recent changes in the listings on Petfinder as well. The volunteers who list the dogs are no longer playing nice. Frustration is overflowing in the listings.
Overpopulation is everywhere, and I think it's getting to the point of insanity. It looks like someone is finally trying to promote awareness. What this group is asking for, is volunteers and IDEAS on how to get word out. They also need a webmaster.
So, anyone have any ideas? I was thinking about informative flyers. What do you all think? What should they say? People here need to get in the know about exactly what's going on. I think there is a potential to ease the burden if everyone was aware of how sad the situation is, and how it needs to be under better control.
What if everyone in the forum helped to make a good message on paper and distributed them? Has anyone here done this before?
Once I get ideas, I will email them to the organization. It may not change anything, but at least I could say I tried.
Thanks in advance, and I will be back tomorrow afternoon to update you on Girl's surgery!
EDIT:
I had emailed them to ask about the flyer idea. I just got a reply. The woman tells me she is currently working on a brochure on her computer, and she would LOVE my help in making and distributing it!! OK, ideas from you guys are now mandatory!
