Do you use a treadmill for your dogs?

Do you use a treadmill for your dogs?

Today I decided to let the girls walk on the treadmill with me. They always see me on it and just relax and watch. So I decided to let them try it out. I was really surprised at how much they loved it! Even Mattie (who is usually afraid of most things) loved it.
This is going to be really good for Casie, because Mattie always wears out way before she does on walks and I can let Casie run on the treadmill to finish wearing her out.
And to find something that my scaredy dog seems to love is really great! She seemed so proud of herself, head up high, tail up, and jogging right along.
Just curious if anyone else uses the treadmill for their dogs?

Yup, its huge with working dogs and dof fighters. Some states it is illegal to have one for the dogs because it insinuates you fight dogs but I'm sure you wont have a problem with your lil guys, he he> Thats just with pit bulls [:)]
However it is a great way to work out the dogs and plenty dogs go crazy for treadmills!

The medium jog-a-dog is my DREAM toy!
I am so not gonna be able to afford it anytime soon but I totally want one! [&:]

That Jog-a-dog thing looks fun.  WIth Giz if she is not sleeping she is a never ending fuzz of hyperness.  When I let her outside she does not stop running and playing.  Inside I always have to hold her to calm her down or she will not stop.  I think a tredmill will do her some good inside.  With her high anxity it might help to clam that a little also.

    Wow I didn't know that.
Sorry for the stupid question but...
Why are treadmills associated with fighting? Is it supposed to make them aggresive? I would not want that to happen.

builds stamina, muscle, and endurance [;)
Many Champion show dogs are treadmilled...it creates a very hard condition with little owner effort lol!

Thanks Gina, that makes sense. My little Fattie err I mean Mattie, lol. Could use a little more conditioning. I walk her 3 times a day, but she is only good for about 20 -30 minutes before she poops out. So  2-3 minutes on the treadmill several times a day may help keep off the extra weight.

I definitely do not.  But I know it's a fashionable thing to do in Manhattan for those with pocketbook pooches who's paws never touch the natural ground!  I think it's fine for "extracurricular" conditioning, or for rainy days - but I think it's a very poor substitute to fresh air and ground!

Oh lord no. It is a way for the lazy dog fighters to exersice them without having to do any work themselves. The jerks.
For the rest of us its a great addition to the exersice we give them and also great for rainy days!

I agree with you on the Christine. If that were a dogs only excerise that would be sad and cruel in my opinion too. One of my favorite sights is when I am able to watch my girls off leash running at top speed chasing eachother and playing hard.. Well actually...my #1 favorite sight is to see them running back to me at full speed!

i agree, I would only use the treadmill as a last resort. Make your dogs walk enjoyable, not an obligation! Doing that is just making them work, what fun is that for them?!

Holy mackeral!!  The XLarge model is almost $3,000!!  And, weighs almost 300 lbs!  Why couldn't a dog use a "people" treadmill for a lot less money??

I agree that it shouldnt be a substitue for fresh air but you'd be surprised at how many dog go crazy for the treadmills. My friends Dobie loves it a lot even with the ample exersice he gets!

Well so far my dogs seem to think the treadmill is a treat. I opened it again tonight to see if they seemed interested. They both came happily running to it, like its a treat for them. So I gave them both another 2 minutes.

This was only their second time on it. And I have only kept them on for 2 minutes at a time. So reallys its more of a novel treat than a workout. They get plenty of  daily walks and off leash time to excersize. And they go to *work* with me every day/ I spend the days taking care of my father and another elderly gentleman. So I know they are far from bored or neglected.
I know Im rambling here, I am just happy to have found something else they really seem to enjoy. Especially for Mattie, she is usually so nervous, and she seems to be so proud of herself on it.[:)
