Don't make too much out of it.  The dog will be fine.  Dont think your'e the only one who ever did this.  I know how you feel, but you must let it go.  There is some kind of blood clotting powder that you can buy at the drugstore.  Forget what it is called, but it may be ok for dogs - read the label and see....
 
Take your dog for a brisk walk or play ball with him or something!

I put some styptic pencil (my husbands) on it which is supposed to help and it has stopped.  I gave him a busybone dental chew (like the movie gone in 60 seconds) and he is in his favorite spot in the sun.  I really need to do 3 more nails but I'm too nervous now [&:]  I'll try tonight or tomorrow
For all his high energy needs he is incredible with poking, prodding, shots, etc.  He was however looking at me like wow you're dangerous []

It's important to NOT make a big deal out of it.  I've quicked my dogs quite a few times, and at first, they would try to run away from me.  But, I made sure to keep them there and finish.  That way, they learn that if it happens, that doesn't mean they get to run away like little brats.  Now, they will stay until I'm done.  I could quick every nail(not that I've ever done that) and they would stay.  It is important to me that they let me do what ever needs to be done to them regardless of pain.  Lately, I've been using the Dremel though so I can get the nails shorter without quicking them.

thanks it was bleeding bad enough that I couldn't have done the other 3 - he is nervous now though as he saw me get the scissors to cut a tag and he ran to the other room.  I'm going out for dinner tonight but will have to do the others later.  By his reaction to the scissors it could be interesting.
If he really resists I don't know how I'll do it as he is sooooooooooo strong

And I do agree that its important that they let you do whatever you need to do.  he used to resist ear cleaning but that is no biggie now.  We'll have to do the same with the nails now.

I've quicked Marlowe. Both dogs have black nails and are a tad squirmy. It happens. I apply pressure and styptic powder, give them a treat and try not to make a big deal out of it.

Remember when you were a kid and you injured yourself, but it didn't really become totally scary until your mom came out and started to freak out? I think it's like that.

I made a non-issue of it, and the next time I went to do her nails, I don't think she remembered the "incident" at all. []

LOL, it is exactly like that!  That brought back a childhood memory...When my finger was slammed in the door, my father said, I would lose the fingernail...that did not make me so upset but when my mother got all anxious and "why do you say that in front of her...."  God, that was what made me upset alright....  And why I know not ever to do that~!

Next time you go to clip nails, put some peanut butter on the fridge and let him lick it off while you clip.  It may take some time to overcome the fear (getting quicked hurts).  Be patient, and if you can't do it, it's only about $6 to have a really good groomer do it for you)
BTW, you can stop the bleeding with Quik Stop, Clotisol, or even corn starch.

I feel sad that I did it because he has been so calm when I do it - he wears down his back nails so it is only his front ones - I have considered having someone else do it but I wondered how he would be - he's insanely strong and huge but doesn't ( and you don't to use it) respond to force.
I had to tell a vet tech to back off and just hold him, tell him he's a good boy, stroke his head and he'll let you do anything.  try to bully him and you will lose
He's a rescue, don't know if that has anything to do with it or not but he was very nervous about a lot of things (SA etc) when we got him and someone using force frightens him you can see it.  I'm not saying all groomers or tech's use force but if he resisted or they tried to pin him, he would win the wrestling match
One of neighbors tries to grab his collar & scruff to hold him close and he freaks.  I have informed this neighbor several times to back off.  Oner day I think Bugs will ensure he doesn't try it aghain - and that is what I am trying to avoid
