The good news is that it's probably a reaction to the sutures. The bad news is, your vet is nuts if he thinks seven is old in anything other than an Irish Wolfhound or Scottish Deerhound. Good grief, I've got two seven year olds here who have just started advanced training. Ben is almost 11 and still going strong! Let's not even talk about Maggie, who will turn 13 in two weeks.

You do need to have it looked at pronto, by someone who still has all his or her marbles. [8|]

Rebecca is right.  My last dogs who passed away lived to be 18 and 17.  I still have one that is 17.
7 is middle age to most dogs, not ancient at all.
Find a vet who is medically well trained, and who shares your desire to do the best by your dog, no matter her age.

Are you familiar with a cancer diet; it uses fat for energy instead of carbs. It doesn't cure the cancer but it helps starve it by denying the carbs cancer needs and dogs usually feel better and live longer on this diet. If you e-mail Callie ( username calliecritturs) she will send you information about it; it is a homecooked diet combined with supplements. I'll be sending healing thoughts your way and checking for an update on Monday.

    UPDATE!

The surgery went fine, and two lumps were removed.  He thinks they are made of the same thing, and that they were caused by a local reaction to having shots there in the past.  He says they don't look cancerous, but that they sent them to the lab anyway to confirm this.  She has REAL stitches this time, and I am all around, very VERY happy about my decision to get a second opinion!

She's lying on the floor now in front of a small heater, trying to sleep off the drugs.  I wish I knew how to post pics here, because I would share some of her napping peacefully.

Thanks for the support and the advice!  If anything weird comes out in the labwork, you know I will update you all on that as well!

So glad to hear that everything went well. It definitely sounds like your second opinion paid off. We'll be hoping for a speedy recovery for her!
