DIY shots?

    DIY shots?

Howdy.  I've lurked a bit lately but just not posted.  Here's my question.  Does anyone do their own shots?  My dogs are due, and there's a clinic close by that charges "a la carte" for services, making things MUCH cheaper.  I can pay $25 for an exam or $25 for the heartworm test, do my own 7 way shot for $5, and pay $10 for a rabies vacc.  Even if I do both the HW test and the exam, that will only cost me $65 per dog vs. upwards of $135 per dog at a regular vet office.

I've given plenty of IM equine shots, but it actually looks easier to find the doggy "sweet spot".  Any advice for getting the shot in the right spot?  I know you give it under the loose skin at the base of the neck.  Thanks!

I do my own now aside from Rabies. My FIL who's a vet showed how. Making sure you get properly stored and chilled vaccine is most important...along with the right size syringe of course.

Basically you tent up the skin around the neck/shoulder area, and administer...you draw up a bit on the syringe to make sure there's no blood...and prior make sure you squeeze all the air out. You also make sure you are not hitting a shoulder blade which is painful and not poking thru the skin so the vaccine simply ends up on the coat...

My pups and dogs tolerate it very well, and I watch them closely afterwards and keep them quiet to make sure there's no reaction. I can give the shots I want this way and make sure they are not getting combo's I don't want.

Be aware however that DIY will give you trouble with some vets when you want to board/obtain surgeries...so make sure you note everything and keep the insert from your vacc's to show them. Have it written out clearly and concisely what you gave, and when, and how, and be prepared for them NOT boarding your animal unless you let THEM give yet another set...or Bordatella or whatever.

My mom or my sister (don't remember who) did Max's shots other than his rabies because he is so terrified of vets that he has to be sedated. He used to be fine with it, but since being neutered he has been absolutely terrified of vets, and it wasn't the vet that neutered him that I tried to take him to. So, since I didn't want all his shots at the same time, and rabies has to be done by a vet for legal reasons, I had the vet sedate him and give the rabies shot, and a few weeks later someone did the rest. He was perfectly fine with it, and didn't even know what was going on.
Now he doesn't need a rabies shot again for 3 years, and we'll cross that road when we come to it. If he's still terrified, he'll be sedated again I suppose, but I really hope it doesn't have to be done that way again. His other shots i'll buy and have someone give to him if I have to do them. I won't do it myself because I am needlephobic, and I say if I have to because there is no rule saying I do, other than if I want to board him or have him go to daycare. He was boarded once this year, and was at daycare a few times. He is going again soon, and they asked if his records were up to date, and since they are not, I need to bring proof of vaccinations when I bring him in again. They didn't seem to have a problem with them having been done at home luckily. I'll probably give others again next year as well since I anticipate his going to day care a few days a week next fall. If he doesn't go in other years, i'll just wait to give them until I need to.
