If Rudy Guiliani is the president, KISS YOUR PIT BULLS, PIT BULL MIXES AND PIT BULL-LOOKING DOGS GOOD-BYE!

It's official, he's going for the Presidency in 2008. All other issues aside, Pit Bull owners concerned about BSL should NOT support Guiliani. He has expressly stated that he believes Pit Bulls should be exterminated. He tried to pass a law in NY imposing very strict regulations against Pit Bulls. He has made no secret of the fact that he despises Pit Bulls. He wanted to ELIMINATE HEARINGS on dangerous dogs and let cities DESTROY pets without such a hearing.

    http://www.jrn.columbia.edu/studentwork/bronxbeat/1999/march/march8/pitbull.html

Any politician that advocates ELIMINATING due process HEARINGS for any reason is NO politician that should be President of the United States. Hearings for people accused of committing crimes are a Constitutional Right (and most dangerous dog citations fall under the criminal code against the owner). Rudy Guiliani wants to bypass the United States Constitution and deprive people of their Constitutional Rights.

    Sound familiar?

And this time it's not even to allegedly fight TERRORISM. It's because he doesn't like the kind of DOGS some people own.

    Scary.

Giuliani Proposes Tough Law on 'Dangerous' Dogs, Angering Owners

DISPLAYING ABSTRACT - New York City Mayor Giuliani administration trains its quality-of-life sights on city's dogs with bill that would increase fines for harboring dogs deemed to be dangerous, deny dogs any consideration for being provoked into barking or biting, and require owners of pit bulls to obtain $100,000 in liability insurance before being granted dog license

I'm also wondering -- so under his regime, if a serial murderer breaks into your home and tries to kill you, and your dog BITES the would-be killer, your dog is deemed dangerous without a hearing and euthanized?

I don't care who ELSE you support for President, but I urge all dog owners to vote NO to Rudy Guiliani and to spread the word far and wide. We have a year to get the word out to dog lovers everywhere.

Rudy Guiliani cannot be the next President, and it has so much more to do with DOGS. It has to do with basic due process rights afforded by the United States Constitution... rights that separate this country from many others.... Rights that many men and women have died protecting.

If a cop shot Sally it would be easy to tell that it was bogus--she would be shot in the arse while fleeing-lol.

Lol...well I guess if you have to get shot the arse isn't the worst place. It is evidence in it's own way isn't it? lol Here's to hoping no one here ever has to find out tho!

Show of hands----who here thinks that if this dog had been a lab is would still be with us today, even if it had behaved in EXACTLY the same manner?

Oooh oooh me!  My only question is the same question I always ask in these cases and in the case of a police officer killing a person - what about non-lethal force? Pepper spray? Airhorn?

My dogs have access to my yard when I am not home (dog door) and I'd hate to think someone coming through my yard HAD to kill my dogs.

    Paula

That was going to be my question as well. However A LOT of people when enraged or under high pressure prove to be able to keep barreling on and still causing the officer damage. While I always try to take the dog's side I cant imagine being in a dark alley, sense onthe highest alert, looking for possible trouble (the bad guy) and having some snarling crazy dog coming after you. I know a police officer should be able to think quick under pressure but they are only human and all I can hope is that IF the dog was fully contained then this wouldnt have happened. I am not forgiving of irresponsible pit bull owners because everyone suffers for their ignorance. It seems to me that the nature of this particular dog would have gone after any type of stimuli

I completely understand what you're saying. Let me be clearer about my question - we don't seem to use non-lethal equipment at all.  For instance, here is a crazy guy with a knife - I don't expect the cop to try to disarm him, but we don't use established non-letha techniques like nets, beanbag guns, etc used in other countries like Japan, we have to go straight to shooting the guy. So I'm not saying that for the moment it would be wrong to shoot the fellow, but that there are many non-lethal but incapacitating techniques available that we don't seem to consider as part of the equipment.

Good grief!!!!!  Well, I know who I will be voting AGAINST this election.  I could even be talked into voting for Hilary if it means preventing him from becoming president.....

Thank you for posting that.  Does pitbullforum.com know yet?  If not, perhaps you should post it there....

We also had an idiot woman allow her daughter to be bitten by a 12y/o, half blind, Akita today in Texas...so idiots do indeed, abound!

We've had a couple of those type incidents around here.  Several months ago a 18 month old child was badly biten by a St. Bernard she was left unattended with (they had only had the dog for a few weeks, it was a rescue), and a couple of weeks ago we had a HORRIBLE incident where a 6 yr old boy left HOME ALONE with the family rots, was mauled by them so badly that the bone was visible on some parts of his body.  If the neighbors had not heard screams and taken action, who knows what might have happened.

I have to agree with Gina on this one.  The officer doesn't have a choice but to react.  The dog could have been a fluffy poodle, the officer has to react as if the dog is dangerous.  If he waits to find out, he could be hurt, or possibly killed- by either the dog or the suspect.

Unfortunate, but true.  But, I do think that cops should receive dog behavior education as part of their training, since they are often called upon to enter premises where dogs live, plus they often assist animal control or humane law enforcement personnel.

The  report said the officer fired several rounds. Since most cops these days are carrying a Glock 10, it holds 14 in the clip and one in the pipe. Sounds like he emptied half a clip to stop one dog. The first shot may have just angered the dog. Still, the dog should have been contained. We need to hear from the neighbors to see if this dog regularly jumps the fence or did the officer open a gate to look and the dog got out then? I would imagine a full investigation would be necessary to assess final liability.

I think the fear of pit bulls plays into it, as well. If it had been a chocolate lab, he might have reacted differently. And yes, "pit bull" grabs immediate headlines.

Ron did you see the news?

The dog was alive when they took it from the scene...bloody but alive. It apparently died because no one at A/C was a vet at that hour...no 24/hr vet means the dog probably bled out lieing in a kennel...which is the truly sad part.

They did show the dog tho...it was hard to watch, but he was alive and moving and standing on his own feet at the end of A/C's noose.

They do have the video up but PLEASE do not look if you are easily upset. The A/C officer treats the dog like a sack of potatoes IMO and I AM writing to them about that and their refusal to scan the dog and call the folks and let them at least take it to an ER vet!

I htink it would have made the news, but it would have been along the lines of, "Heroic Lab Perishes Trying to Keep Family Home Safe" and the Lab people would be screaming for this officer's head.

I don't think cops are paid enough for what they do BUT there are many who use their weapons at the slightest provocation.  Why didn't s/he just use a Taser?  It would have been nonlethal and WOULD have stopped the Pit.

The dog might well have been a problem in the past.  However, I would bet money that it was just defending its property.

Don't be silly--you should know by now that bullets bounce off of pits [8|].
