Breeding for temperament it's a BIGGY!

Actually, I don't think we have had any who are dog aggressive in the time that I have been working with him. We haven't had any that bite either

That's pretty fantastic, within the breed, Colleen!  When I was having so many problems with Emma (during her puppyhood), I emailed about a zillion and seven JRT/PRT people. They all said that it's normal. ALL of them are food aggressive. ALL are leash aggressive. ALL are dog aggressive.

Of course, Emma has proven them wrong, by working with me, past her faults.

Unfortunately, the breed has been ruined by many people.  Its awful to see, because they are great dogs!  Of course, there are disagreements once in a while, but never serious fights.  Except between those two that hate each other.  Usually, its over something stupid, and once we break up the fight, they are ok again.  That doesn't happen often though.  But, with terriers, it is something that you have to be prepared for just in case.  That is why we try to breed away from it and really work with them when they are young.  A dog should be able to be a pet most of all.  Because if it can't, no one will want to work with it in showing or performance events.  Its not fair to the dogs that way.

I see socialization and temperment as 2 different things.  With regard to this thread, temperment is something that is bred into the dog, pre-wired if you will.  Socialization is something we train into our dogs. IMO socialization and training will only take you so far if the "right" temperment is not already bred into the dog.

As a prior Akita owner all I can say is BINGO! [;)]

I totally agree, I think a dog not bred for temperament will never be a dog that is 100% reliable, but socialization and training will bring your odds up to about 80%. This is only my opinion from reading and observing. I could be totally wrong.

Way to go Emma!! I agree, there are many JRT/PRT people who have aggressive dogs and think, well, "its a JRT thing"...I say no way! [:D]  Dasher is super sweet and has never met a dog he didn't like, however he is still "all terrier" if you ask him! [;)]  I have friends who have JRT that are tempermental and resource gaurders.   I just don't think this has to be the norm.  One can have a  "terrier with drive" without the aggressivness towards others.  Dasher's breeder dogs are just that, they can play together with toys, etc and have a great time, however once its time to "work" they are all business.
