Registered vs Unregistered Puppy???

I don't look down on unregistered dogs, but if I'm looking to get a purebred from a breeder, and if I'm gonna pay all that money for a dog, I want one that's papered and has champion parents. This is because I don't want to support backyard breeders in their money-making schemes, because they don't care about the animals, and I do. If I go to somebody who has bred champions to get pups, they have done health tests and the whole thing, and they really don't care about the money. Plus, I know I'll be getting a healthy dog without temperament problems.

The corgi pup I'm getting in 2 weeks comes from champion parents. The breeder has health tests done, and she has a strict puppy contract to ensure that these pups go to the right homes (a spay-neuter contract for the pet-quality ones). She begins crate-training the pups before they even go to their homes, as well as training them to have their paws and mouths handled. She keeps them until they're 12 weeks old which is ideal for early socialization. And all the pups are papered, even the pet-quality ones.

Most people who don't even bother to breed papered dogs to get papered pups wouldn't do all this.

But even so, I wouldn't consider just having papers a good excuse to breed two dogs. You can paper anything. So really to me, papers mean nothing without titles. I wouldn't buy a pup from two dogs that weren't titled in conformation or the field.

I could rescue an unpapered, purebred dog from a local shelter for less, and be saving a life.

umm, I don't think the AKC recognizes the breed "american bulldog" which might explain why your dog isn't registered with them.

you are probably right.  But from a purely health standpoint, the dogs should be registered SOMEPLACE, health tested and proven in some way.

According to dogbreedinfo.com ambulls can be registered with the following registries:ABA, ARF, UKC, NKC, NABA, ARBA, JDJB, ABCC, AABC, NKC, CKC, APRI, ACR

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I certainly don't look down on the little guy. As others said, it's nice to be able to look at the lineage and such if your going to pay money for the dog, but you have more info about him than most people have about rescue dogs. However, people with rescue dogs generally also have no idea how long their dogs could live, what kind of health problems may pop up in the future, etc.

Either way, he's ubber cute--I love Ambulls!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep in mind, quite a few of those registries listed are not reputable at all. Some of them only require your "word" and a picture and you can register your dog as whatever breed you think it is. So if you found an intact dog off the street, want to breed it and know that people will pay more money when they see the word "registered", these people can register their dog with such a registry regardless of the fact that the dog may not be that breed at all, they have no clue about the dogs ancestry or what health issues may lurk there.

LMAO... I didn't even think about that breed not being recognized by the AKC.  [sm=party.gif]

UKC and CKC (CanKC) are reputable.  >^_^<  And if any of those are the actual breed club for this breed, they are hopefully reputable (I'm bad with most abbreviations lmfao).

I wish I did more investigation on the breed before i jumped the gun!!! We thought we made a good choice, but were not so familiar with buying from breeders and the importance of registration papers!!! We were looking for a dog that was good with children, family companion and able to scare off intruders. My parents made a mistake of  buying a dog from a petstore a shitzu who was also registered (dont know with who???) and he is so grouchy!!! They also had a black lab which was registered with CKC and bought from a breeder, but i was younger and didnt really know anything about registration cause my dad didnt use the papers for anything,, Now we made the mistake of buying from a backyard breeder!!! Oh well live and learn i guess!! and from what i read American Bulldogs are not registerable with AKC or CKC??? Well we are going to be getting another dog when he is old enough, but not sure if it will be another American Bulldog or another breed??? I love the Boston Terrier but we have a toddler and i think that breed is just to small to handle a toddler???I have to find something that is more sturdy, I just have to do more research on what would get along with a Amercian bulldog and young children??? I love dogs and i really want to have 2 so my other dog could have a playmate!!!

I have Boston Terriers and they do well with toddlers. Bostons can range in size from 10 to 25lbs. My two weigh 10 and 13lbs. If you want to check out more info on Bostons, clicky [linkhttp://www.bostonterrierclubofamerica.org]here[/link]. [:)]

Forgive me for my lack of patience as I skip halfway down the thread to add that even with papers, you really have no way of knowing "who the dog is" unless there has been a DNA test.  The AKC is notorious for taking the breeders' word on whether or not animals are purebred, which has led some puppy mills/BYBs to misregister crossbreed animals or even to match papers with puppies as they come.  The AKC's registry system is just a means of record-keeping and can be abused just as easily as a misbalanced checkbook.

The American Bulldog is a good dog with children, they are very sweet and the look will scare of unwanted guests easily although he/she would probably lick them to death unless threatened.

If this was purely for a pet, I wouldn't say it was a bad choice, I'd say you probably chose by your heart  [;)] cause that is one sweet looking pup there!

Thanks, he is a great pup!! yeah they would only scare intruders by their looks, mine would probably just lick the pants off anyone!!! When i take him for walks he goes nuts when people come up to us!! [:)] he is overly friendly!!! Some dogs look scary but are just teddy bears!!! I really dont care if he's not registered im not showing him or breeding him he is just our family companion nothing more, but when i choose my next dog i will be registered.... still unsure of what breed??? i like the boston terrier, bull mastiff, bull terrier, pug, american staffordshire terrier, french bulldog, english bulldog..... still doing research on what i would like to add to my family in maybe a year!!! [:)][:)][:)][:)][:)]

I wouldn't worry about anything.  You love your pup.  You are happy with him. End of story.  If you are happy with him then it was the right decision for you.  If you choose to go with a different breeder down the line, so bo it.  But don't waste your time thinking about what you could have done here.

In terms of the lineage and health testing--I can certainly understand people wanting as much info on their pup as possible, but the fact of the matter is that no one knows if their dog/child/spouse is going to drop dead tomorrow.  You can't control it.  Enjoy today and roll with it!

Lastly, don't waste your time trying to figure out how to respond to people who ask if he is papered.  Just say no and ignore their reactions.  Their responses say more about them than your pup.  It's none of their business, so don't sweat it.  Only you can let them make you feel badly.

By the way, he's so cute.  Good lord!

BUT...if I am going to PAY for a dog as opposed to adopting from a rescue or shelter, then that is when I would like the dog to be registered with a legitimate registry. I would like to know who his/her parents are, the health testing that was done before and after the litter was born.

Then how do you account for the millions of puppymill puppies that are registered by the AKC ? Do you actually think those puppies were tested at ANY point in their lives ? Or their dam/sire tested ???

Papers mean absolutely nothing when it comes to the health/temperament/genetics of the dog. The only thing a registry does is document lineage and it only has to go back 2-3 generations w/some registries and others make sure the dog conforms to breed standards. There is NO guarantee of anything else just because you buy a dog that has papers.

If I were going to, I would register with the UKC; they are reputable.
