toilet water vs. fresh water

eww, my dog would totally drink out of the toilet if he was allowed to. regardless of the fact i dont use harsh store bought chemicals in any part of my house, toilet bowls have alot of gross bacteria in them!  streptococcus, staphylococcus, e. coli, just to name a few. i'm not certain if a dog can contract these, but i'm not taking any chances, i dont want a sick dog, and he licks my face, so i dont particularly want a strep or staph infection either.

I expect it's the same thing as people choosing to drink Budweiser when they could actually afford something like Shiner Bock, lmao.

There's no acocunting for taste, and old habits die hard.

    Here's some interesting reading:

You can also consider one of those pet fountains that supposedly cycle the water so it's always "fresh tasting".

As much as I hate to admit this, our Loki tries to run in and drink the toilet water AS IT'S FLUSHING!! I will never understand that - unless he likes the "waterfall" appeal it has. But we have to make sure he's not in the bathroom with us when we go, or it gets nasty!! [:D]

I'm a stickler for keeping the lid down. I've always had this irrational fear that my cat will jump in the toilet and drown, so I make sure the lid is down no matter what. It took a while for DH to get used to, but he does it now too.

So neither of our boys have ever gotten the chance to drink toilet water, which is just fine with me!

there is the smell that my wife leaves there that would repel even the most determined doggy

    You're sure it's your wife?

My toilet seat is always down, and the door is always closed.  If I have my sugar gliders out, they could easily fall in and drown.  They cannot swim very well at all.  My dogs won't drink out of it, but Rose fell in once.  They usually follow me into the bathroom(well, every room) and I got up went to flush the toilet and Rose jumped up before I had time to close the lid before flushing.  She is very careful about jumping up there anymore.  In fact, I haven't seen her sit there at all in a long time.  She used to sit on it while I was in the shower.

Sasha is obsessed with toilet water. The only thing that keeps her from drinking it is the bathroom door. Even if you shut the lid. Sometimes I forget to shut the door before bed...

Many o' nights I've got up, blind, to pee, and sat in puddles of water on the seat. She actually opens the lid, drinks her share, then lets it drop shut.
