What to do when your dog get attacked?

Last night I went to walk my dog Katira but things didn't go very well. We were just turning the corner of our apartment building when I saw the lady from next door coming out with her bull dog. Katira loves to play with other dog but I just picked her up from the vet for her 2nd heartworm treatment shot and she's not allowed any excitement, furthermore I didn't know that dog so we started to turn around. The next think I see is that big dog running straight to my baby. He jumped on her and grabed her by the neck. The lady was looking at her dog chewing mine and she didn't do anythink.
I wasn't any better. I found myself helpless not knowing what to do. It was dark so I couldn't see where to grab the bull dog. I also didn't know how he would react if I started to pull him by his collar. I didn't have any object around me that I could have used and I was wearing flip flop so I couln't really kick the dog either. The only thing I was able to do was shout for my boyfriend to come help. The husband and master of the dog finaly came out and took control of his dog. To my relief Katira was fine, the bull dog only had grabed her by the neck but he didn't bit her hard.
This time everything turned out OK but I never want to feel that helpless again. It took at least 2 minutes for the owner to arrived and those where some of the longest minutes of my life. If that dog had really biten her hard, I don't think she would be here today.
I would like to know what I should do if that situation repeat itself. Next time I want to be able to react. Someone told me I should hit the other dog as hard as I can on the head. I'm not sure that is a good idea. Any suggestions?

i would suggest carrying mace. if you rap the dog on the head chances it will attack you are pretty good.. if you mace it, it wont be able to see you and therefor you will have optimal time to get out of the area. while i would hate to mace a dog, it sounds like the best option to me.

Bull dog?  I didn't think Bull dogs were that big?  Are you sure it was a Bull dog?  What kind of a dog do you have?  I am so sorry your dog got attacked.  But I am glad both of you are ok.

I would rather see you carry Direct Stop.  It's a harmless, but very unpleasant, citronella spray and you can blast the attacker right in the face without doing any real damage.

I'm so glad that no one got hurt.  I would definitely recommend either Direct Stop or cider vinegar in a spritz bottle to startle the attacking dog.  You do NOT want Mace.  If you happen to be downwind from the mace & it gets in your eyes it's not pleasant.

It attacked so it MUST have been a bull dog, lol! If a bull dog grabbed onto her dog for two minutes it would have been dead

Or is she blaming the attack on a bully breed or supposed bully breed?

Glenda. I have heard of this stuff but never seen it. Can you buy it in a store or do you have to go online??

I've seen it at petsmart. My dad wanted to get some, but he wanted something that would also stop humans, so he says he'll go with the pepper spray if he can ever find any. I say carry a switchblade for humans. Who in their right mind is going to attack a 6'5 big guy without a gun, in which case he wouldn't be able to do anything anyways.

I'm not 100% sure it was a bull dog because it was very dark but it looked a lot like one. The dog was about meduim size ( just a little bigger that my dog) but he was twice as large. I don't blame the dog but the person walking him because she couldn't handle him. If you know your dog is aggressive you should be sure he's tight on the leash specialy in an area with many dogs around.

Is it really THAT important what breed the dog was?  The point is that the OP was attacked & needs help to keep it from happening in the future.

I could'nt agree more..I would take Glenda's advice and get some Direct Stop

I have heard ( and I wouldn't do this unless it were ABSOLUTELY necessary) that if you hit a dog on the bridge of his nose with some force, it will shatter the cartlidge in his nose and he won't be biting anyone for a long time. That is a little extreme to me though unless the alternatives(like the direct stop spray) did not work.

WHat if the spray isn't enough to deter the agressive dog?
