Here we go...it's a weekend again...

I've heard that buying heartworm medications on line is much cheaper . . . however I've also heard that there is a higher risk of getting black market product.

My vet only charges $8 a dose for heartguard.  I don't know about other people, but I'm willing to pay $8 a month if it comes with the securtiy that I know exactly what I'm getting.  Plus when you buy from a lic. vet, if your dog DOES get heartworm, the treatment will be covered at no cost (at least at my vet).

I recently bought HeartGaurd and Frontline for the first time for my new dog....one was $6, and one was $12....I've often heard that the stuff you find online for cheaper is ususally outdated, and therefore, less effective, or not effective.  I can handle $6 and $12/mo.

I agree.  I've always been leery of buying any kind of meds - dog or people - on line.  You just never know what you're getting or know anything about the quality control.

Hmmm, I was seriously thinking about ordering from Omaha Vaccine. My vet is so expensive.  I do think the chances of getting off market stuff is higher when online; however, it doesn't mean you won't get off market stuff at your vet, either.  Or you local human pharmacy.  Sometimes their distributors get duped, and the local guys don't know it's not real, either.  Omaha has licensed vet pharmacists, for what that's worth.  My vet is double their cost - even the thyroid meds I get is really over priced at my vets.   If anyone has heard of this company, I would love some feedback.  Thanks.

Chasza, I think Omaha Vaccine is OK.  They're a US based company and they've been in business a long time.  I know lots of people who have ordered from them and they've never had a problem with anything. And you can call them and actually talk to a live person!! I would just be hesitant to go on-line and start ordering meds without being really sure where I was ordering from.

    Thank you, Joyce.

I spend soooo much money on testing and such ( thyroid, titers ) never mind other stuff , that I've finally gotten to the point that I would ask my vet for a prescription.  If I didn't go in there so much, I think I would feel differently.  I know vets have got to make a living too, but I've certainly done waaayy more than my share in that department.  So, thanks for letting me know your opinion.  I've got to go in again this month for both dogs to be tested again, and I'll get a prescriptions then.  Gee, the heartworm meds are almost half off.  That's a big difference.  I suppose it's volume ordering -- My vet orders with other local vets to cut costs, but apparently, it's still way higher than Omaha.

OV also puts out a paper catalog. You can get the toll free # from "toll free info" and ask them to send you one.  It's kind of nice to browse through it - a lot of times they'll have stuff in there that isn't on-line, but when you see something you like, you can go on-line and plug in the code no.
