    Possible New Kitten- Please help!

I know this belongs in the Kitty board but i'd thought it would get a better response here.

Im thinking of getting a kitten. This will be my first indoor cat. As I mentioned once I am slightly allergic to cats. But I have been visiting a house with a cat and the reactions have been extremely minimal.

The thing is I am looking for a specific kitten: Female and I want one that looks like me old cat (Kitty Siamese mix, my 1st and only cat) Ive seen a stray kitten on my way to work who has a striking resemblance.

My fear is this: That because she is a stray she wont know how to use the box and I have no clue hw to litter train a cat. I had a litter of kittens once and one of them urinated in my house and it was the nastiest smell ever and I do not want that type of smell in my home. I also dont want to take a kitten in and then not be able to train it, because I really want her to be indoors (Kitty was an outdoor cat and she was poisoned)

Anyone have any advice on litter box training? Are they naturals, or will a street kitten not know how to use the box?

Also any advice, facts on kittens would be greatly appreciated!

Cats like to cover their pee and poop, so a place like a litter box is ideal for the baby. I have always put the cat in the box, one time, let it sniff around and then they always know where to go.

Years ago a friend of mine found a feral female with 2 kittens under her porch.  She enticed mom up with some food, and mom turned out to be friendly, so she brought the kittens up.  Wanting to find a home for them, she asked me if I wanted a few?  I was in college and agreed to take a kitten, she kept the other kitten and mom.

Training the litter box, I did what Tiffy suggested.  He was small, so I bought a shallow box, placed it in it's permanent spot and place the kitten inside, several times a day.  He understood quickly, and pee'd in the box.  He had an accident once and pooped next to it, so I picked it up and place it into the box, then put the kitten in the box.  He immediately buried the poop, and was forever trained!  Once he reached full sixe, I bought a covered litter box.  I left the cover off for a week, to allow him to adjust, then covered it, it sweetened the transition.

As for the smell of a cat's urine, I can vouch from experience, that a neutered/spayed cat's urine does not smell like one that's not altered!  Plus with males, they're less likely to raom if you pernit them outdoors.  I have 2 altered males, strictly indoors, they go onto the pation for fresh air, I have no problems with them tearing at my screens, or scratching to go out.  Good luck.

I definately planned on getting this baby spayed, I CANNOT deal with a cat in heat, its nowhere near as tolerable as a dog.

But its nice to have some reassurance that they train fairly easy.

Has anyone had any problem with them pooping/peeing on the bed?

Never! I've had cats all my life and they've always gone in the box. Except my 18 yr. old, whos now at the bridge. In her last days she went by the front door.

Never had an accident with any of my cats.  They are naturals, just get a shallow box, maybe a shoebox top and put the kitty in it.   Eventually get the regular box.

Only when cats got really old like 18-20's with kidney failure did they have accidents by peeing outside the box.  Now I know, their arthritic legs could not get over the edge.  I used a box knife to cut the opening low in the front.  Infact you could that right now for the kitty.

Get the cat neutered .  I have had probs with my nuetered male cat spraying when an unneutered male came to stay for a while.

I was actually offered an adorable striped male kitty the other day, but Im not too keen on male cats and I said no. I especially dont like the spraying thing.

When I get my kitten it will be a female and she will be spayed, female cats heats are too unpredictable for my liking, and ive also heard they turn into a pain when in heat, so im not taking any chances!

I have never had a problem with my cats not using the box.  When I got my first cat, a barn kitten, he was my very first cat and I was pretty clueless on cat care 101.  Freddie just used the box.  I made sure he knew where it was, etc. My next cat, Rocky was a stray, we think he was born a stray.  He was very young and Freddie noticed him through the sliding glass door as Rocky was trying to get into our trash to look for food. [:(] He was somewhat feral, took me 2 weeks of coaxing with food, etc to get close enough to catch him.  Again, he had no problems with the box.

Everyone has echoed the same thing: show the kitten where its box is, and it will learn where to go potty.  It's very easy, or at least it has been with my previous and current cat(s).  Good luck, Julitza! [:)]
