My dog the... escape artist?

Tonite I was visiting a friend, and our dogs were in her backyard playing. We were walking around the house looking for lizards, and we round a corner and see my puppy prancing down the street. We call him over and he comes, but we notice the fence to the backyard is open, and her two dogs are nowhere to be found because they had run off. Eventually we got one of them and the other one will return eventually (he runs off a lot).

However, my confusion comes from... my dog not understanding that he can run off sometimes. Granted, that's a GREAT thing and increases my trust of him, but I think it's just hysterical that he stuck close to the house when the other dogs bolted.

Any of your dogs escape artists? Any stories?

Glad to hear he didn't run off and stayed closed.

Blue was an escape artist when he was a pup. I took him to school with me to give him a bath plus we also visited nursing homes. Two times he escaped from his cage thankfully he didn't go very far. The first time we had him for about two weeks when I took him to school he figured out how to squeeze through the food and water dish holes to get out of his cage. The second time he was getting dried in the cage since he tries to bite you when you have the dryer on him. Somehow he figured out how to remove the grating between him and the pan of the cage then he unlock the pin that keeps the pan in the cage. After that he crawled on out of his cage and decided to go visit our shelter dogs in their outdoor kennels. Luckly one of the girls in my glass spotted him when cleaning cages and caught him outside.

Since then we keep a good watchful eye on him and he has never tried to escape again.

My boy Tonka, was horrible for escaping, in fact it has only been the last year that he stopped, if he could he would climb, failing that he went to digging. He would bolt out the door, hte only way to catch him was to drive up to him and say Tonka wanna go for a car ride?? And in he would bail. He has mellowed out since the apartment and we dont have a dog run anymore I think the fact that he has to whole yard makes it better too.

Oh yes! Peanut has a habit of digging holes under our chain link fence and roaming the neighborhood. She got into that habit this past year, and we can't figure out why?? I was glad to see that Draico did not follow her. She got so bad that we installed an invisible fence, for the dogs safety, and I'm happy to say that she hasn't escaped since.

BTW, there was a "debate" of sorts about invisible fence users in the training section.

My dog Tasha figured out she could jump onto the propane tank and hop the fence at our last house. She also clawed her way through a soft-sided crate...[:@]

When we poured the driveway, it first had to be dug down about 3 feet. So now the gate had 3 feet of crawlspace. Perfect for a corgi.[

] Alls she would do is lay on the front porch and wait to be let in. If she gets out, she never bolts and always comes when called. Shes a tad velcro.
