Hey all!

    Hey all!

Sorry I haven't posted in soooo long! My Computer needs work so I have to use DHs.
I have a question for you guys. Dante hurt his leg today.[:(] I think he forgot that he is an old fart for a while and he and Milo were roughhousing and I think he sprained his ankle. It is his left front leg and he is limping and holding it up alot. It is a little swollen, but he seems to be able to move it ok. I checked his paw over and there is nothing stuck between his toes or anything and his paw is fine. He flinches a little when I touch his ankle, but I don't think it is broken.
Does he need to go to the vet? I JUST had my cat at the vet for the exact same thing a few weeks ago and they said there was nothing they could do for a sprain. So I am wondering if I should take him if they are just going to tell me the same thing? I've been trying to make him take it easy, but he follows me EVERYWHERE, he is seriously like my shadow. I don't have a crate for him because he is so huge. Should I keep him in the bedroom so he can't walk around much?
    HELP!!
    Thanks!

Hey there - nice to see you.  It does sound like a sprain (how lovely that he and Milo are having such fun) and I would say if it persists, you should definitely see a vet.  I know you can also give dogs aspirin as an anti-inflammatory - but I can't remember much on dosage.  Maybe this "bump" will put your post back where someone who can advise on dosage will see.

IMHO, take him to the vet!  He may tell you the thing again, but at least you'll know for certain.  I would rather be told it's a sprain and there is nothing that can be done instead of watching my dog limp and it turn out to be something serious.

As for the crate, what breed is Dante?  The collapsible wire crates that are quite large (we bought large breed ones for both our dogs at around $120),  Dog.com has a pretty good selection, and good prices.  Now, in a pinch, maybe you can borrow one from a friend.  Otherwise, maybe you can leash Dante to one spot in the house where he can see you, but not walk around too much.  If that doesn't work, maybe a baby gate or "indoor kennel" to confine him.  Good luck, I hope he feels better soon.

I would get him into the vet.  It is better to be safe than sorry.  It may be a fracture and it won't feel broken or maybe there is trauma to the tendons and ligaments.  He may need to wear a splint for a few weeks, but you really don't know until you get him seen by your vet.  Defiantly don't let him walk around a lot.  I would keep in the part of the house that you are going to be in the most and only let him walk if he is going out for potty breaks.  Hope he gets to feeling better soon.
