    Showing question I came across!

I have always wanted to show dogs, because i absolutley LOVE to watch the shows, so, why not try it!  But, is it possible to show a spayed bitch in a higher leveled show? I have heard both yes and no.

It depends on what kind of showing you do.  Performance events (agility, tracking, obedience, herding, etc) allow spayed & neutered dogs to enter.  Conformation shows (like Westminster and the AKC/Eukanuba shows) don't.  You can check out the events page of the AKC's site for more information on showing.

You can show altered dogs in "veterans" classes - but the dog has to be over 7 years and they're not often offered unless it's your breeds' specialty show.  Sometimes there's fun matches with conformation - and I imagine you could enter those too since they're just for fun.

Your dog needs to be registered with the AKC for those classes - dogs with ILP# or PEN# do not qualify.  (Even if you beg and plead ... been there ... done that...)

I was wondering about the Veteran's class, but didn't see anything about it on AKC's site.  As long as a dog meets the age requirement, can it enter Veteran's even if they've never been shown?

I don't think AKC sactioned matches won't allow altered dogs in conformation.  I think they follow the rules for showing, but don't award points, since these are practice for point shows.  Then again, I could be wrong.  Most of the matches I'm aware of that permit altered (and mixed breed) dogs don't do conformation, just obedience or rally.

    I'm honestly not sure - but I don't think it's like a specials class...

    This is all I found:
In the last few years, a number of clubs have began to recognize their senior citizens by the holding of VETERAN SWEEPSTAKES. Here the division is again by sex and by age, the classes being for those at least seven years of age and under ten years and for those over ten years of age.

If it's an AKC sanctioned match, then AKC rules apply and you cannot show an altered dog.  But if someone holds an unsanctioned fun match, then you can do whatever you want!

Vetrans are non regular and almost exclusively the province of breed clubs.  It does not always have to be a national specialty.  Regional specialties often aligned with all breed shows offer sweeps and other non regular classes.

I thought were the highest level was Best of Breed (ie a breed specialty) you could entered a fixed dog in certain classes (veterans, maybe others).

If you have an Aussie, you can do ASCA conformation shows with an altered animal.

AKC is NOT the only game in town!

UKC often has ALTER classes at regular shows....the show giving club decides that. No points but you can exhibit. Jr Showmanship in UKC also allows the Jr to use an altered dog. Jr's in AKC may also allow this...BUT if the dog is also required to be entered in a regular class which is often the case...then Veterans would be your only option.

CKC Canadian Kennel Club also has an entire ALTER programme, similar to those in cat showing, including Alter Ch.....so your dog can finish TWICE.

Veterans have gone BOB at specialties...non Ch's can be shown in veterans.

From the AKC's book "Rules Applying to Dog Shows":

[size=4]A dog which is blind, deaf, castrated,
spayed, or which has been changed in appearance by
artificial means except as specified in the standard for
its breed, or a male which does not have two normal
testicles normally located in the scrotum, may not compete
at any show and will be disqualified except that a
castrated male may be entered as Stud Dog in the Stud
    [font=centuryoldstyle-regular]
Dog Class and a spayed bitch may be entered as Brood
Bitch in the Brood Bitch Class. ...
Neutered dogs and spayed bitches would be
allowed to compete in Veterans Classes only at independent
    specialties and/or those all-breed shows
which do not offer any competitive classes beyond
    Best of Breed.

So true, Gina, but in this part of the country, unfortuantely, it pretty much is.  There's only one UKC show a yeaar within 200 miles of me.  [sm=sad.gif]   Unfortunately, I'm not like my parents, who thought nothing of traveling 10+ hours each way for horse shows.

That may be but UKC (looks like you have 2 shows per year, NY has 2,MD has 2, Philly has 4 etc etc) is set up that you can at times finish or almost finish a dog in one weekend. Generally there are 2 shows per day...sometimes only 3 tho. If there are 4 you can certainly finish your dog if it's good enough.

I am in Texas...driving 10 hours won't even get you out of the STATE lol...a close show to me is 3-4 hours drive...we keep a small radius...in your area where everything is so bunched there's plenty of UKC action [;)]
