Pitt Bull vs. Porcupine - not for the squeamish

Poor thing!  I can't imagine seeing my dog in that much pain!

a week or so ago on animal cops, there was a cat that fell into a cactus. it was covered with quills much like that dogs face is. it almost made me sick to my stomach to see. the cat was in so much pain that it was constantly howling. they had to sedate it at the vet's office to remove the majority of the quills.

i feel sorry for any animal that is in this situation whether it is caused by a plant or animal.

My parents' dog Roxy (Loki's big sister) met a porcupine on a hike about 2 months ago. She was attacked and had over 100 quills stuck in her side/face. They had to put her under to remove them all. She was pretty tender for a few days afterward. I don't think it looked anything like that pittie, but that can be a fun thing for a pup!

It sure didn't teach her a lesson either, because a few days ago on a walk, she chased a porcupine up a tree. Luckily she didn't get attacked by that one though.

My great uncles dog got attacked by two porcupines at once. They lived on a farm.. the dog got quills in his eyes, up his nose.. he had to be put down. :(

Hopefully the pit was able to have all the quills removed and didn't get put down.

Oh my goodness... Poor puppy.  The story says that most of the quills were removed, and that a few broken pieces come out from time to time, but that she is back to her old self.  She did not have to be put down, thank god!
    Silly doggy....

ah, and that dog is a Bull Terrier, not an American ;Pit Bull Terrier...

oh my god. I think it is safe to say that either the terrier was very determined, the porcupine was very determined, or both were very determined, to get at the other.[:o]

WOW!  That is the craziest thing I've ever seen!  I didn't realize porcupines shoot their quills out of them?!  I'm too much of a city girl I guess!  Thank goodness the dog is OK!!

Wow, I never thought I'd be glad that Conrad has such a fondness for angry skunks--at least they weren't porcupines!

Porcupines actually don't shoot their quills. They just let go of them when they get stuck in an attacker. Kind of like a parrot's tail or a lizard. If you grab onto them they'll just release them. And porcupines are usually fairly docile from what I understand. They don't really want to lose their quills, just if something is attacking them they release them. That must have been one determined dog! Usually getting one or two in the nose is enough and then they let the porcupine run away.

    OUCH!!!
When I was growing up my old dog Jayce tried to eat a baby porcupine, I still remember how she howled...
The vet took about 200 little quills out of her mouth and gums...
    Poor dog.
