    Chewing/licking at paws

Anyone have suggestions of what too put on dogs paws for them to stop chewing at them?  Boomer chews at his fur at his paws and I always try to get him to stop it when I see it but he still does it.  I tried spraying that bitter apple spray but that doesn't work.  WOuld vinegar work? Or tobasco? ANy suggestions would be helpful.

    thanks

I dont have suggestions for anything to apply, but someone is bound to.

Is there a reason he's chewing?  Itchies or dry skin?  Too much fur between the toes?  (I used to have a cat that hated that)  Would trimming the fur shorter in that area help?

    isn't licking normal...
Kira does this every night, part of her little grooming period...
unless your dog is causing itself harm, i don't think it's that big of a deal...

A little grooming is ok but excessive licking/chewing isn't.

What do you feed this dog?  I could be allergies - either food or environmental.

I understand its normal for them to lick at their paws and chew the hair.  But it seems like he works at it pretty intently.  Their is no bleeding that is caused but the paws look 'raw' afterwards.  He just recently got a haircut so his fur on his paws are trimmed.  Maybe he's allergic to something when I take him for a walk.  If it were just a few times a week that would be okay. But it seems he does it everday and its' not for 1 or 2 minutes, sometimes its for a good 10 minutes.  When we've taken him to the vet we've mentioned this and she's looked at it and said nothing is wrong.  I just don't want this to progress to a point where he does damage.

I may be wrong here but I know that when we first received our Jack Russells they said that one of the nervous habits of a dog that is not getting enough exercise was chewing at the paws.  Could that be the problem?  [8|]

I thought about that as well as friends of ours had a really bad problem with thier dog chewing on his paws until it bled which was due to boredom and not enough exercise.  Boomer gets plenty of exercise. He's 35lbs and gets walked everyday for at least an hour with run around time in the backyard and playing with his toys as well.  He normally does this after we come back from a walk so i'm assuming it's a reaction he's getting maybe from the grass he's walking on or something.

Well I don't have anything to stop it but I might have a an idea what is doing it. Spike licks his paws alot when he well pees on them he does not lift his leg very often and sometimes he pees on his own front paws if he does he spends forever licking them I usually get a baby wipe and wipe them off.

Thats a good point and never thought of that. But i've seen him pee and he doesn't have the testicular fortitude to pee that far to his front paws.  He squats but pretty much pees straight down.  If anything it would be his back paws that would have pee on it as he steps in it sometimes after he's done. But he chew on his 2 front paws.

Thats what Spike chews on he actually pees on his own front legs most of the time. If he would lift his leg it would not happen but from what I understand most adult male danes don't I have seen him do it a few times though but he looks uncomfortable.

Our dog chews/licks her paws, all 4 of them, because of allergies.  She's allergic to over 20 environmental stimuli so we can't do anything about it.  She is on Atopica for her allergies though.  So if it's allergies, I think you can use black tea to wipe on the paws to relieve the itching.  I think.  Hopefully someone will be along to help us out.

chewing and licking paws can also be a sign of a food allergy, not just environmental. Also could be a nervous habit. a good supply of chew toys and opportunities to really gnaw on bully sticks or raw bones my relieve the urge if it isn't allergy related.
