    Does size really matter?

Some breeders won't breed tiny Shih Tzus because of breed standard and some say that it is OK, that the AKC has changed standards over the years anyway and tiny ones make just as good pets and live just as long as long as they're bred correctly. I know there are scams out there with anything, but some breeders stand behind their tiny babies and have no problems and say even if the mamas and papas are standard size, they have tiny lines in their genes, and as I've said before, make wonderful pets. Any opinions?

Here are the breed standards for the AKC.  This may help a bit.

But like always the dogs should be tested for defects and health problems before breeding.

I am not a breeder but i would have to say that size does matter.if the dog is not breed standard than it shouldnt be bred.Breeding should only be done to better the breed.Breeding intentionally for "pets"Is not necessary since you aren't going to get a whole litter of show quality pups. You are lucky to get one show quality and then the rest would be sold as pets.JMO however.

The only thing that comes to mind right now is that Shih Tzus can suffer from serious liver problems. Breed down drastically and you increase the liver problems and eye problems.

I dont think its worth it, if "you" want a dog smaller than the Shih Tzu standard, get a well bred Maltese or Yorkie, their supposed to be lighter.

Thanks, that's helpful. Actually, my Shih Tzu's pushing 17 lbs. and he's perfect to me, so standard would be the way I would go again. But you always see these controversial things out there with two sides. [;)]
