    It feels good...

to know that you have informed someone about something they never knew about.

I had two friends over tonight and we got to talking about dogs and somehow the conversation went to petstores and puppies.  I mentioned that these dogs come from puppy mills.  They looked at me like I was crazy and said"what are puppy mills?"  So I explained to them all about what they are and they were totally apalled.  My friend couldn't understand how someone could treat another living creature as they do these dogs.  She didn't get how they could just keep them locked in cages their whole lives and live in those conditions.

I have heard many of you discuss how so many people don't know what puppy mills are and I thought you were crazy [;)]. How could people not know.  Until I found out that my friends didn't even know what they were.  So here are two more people who will never buy puppies from a pet store and hopefully they will share their new knowledge with more people.

I was mostly surprised about this because we do live in PA, not too far from the Amish where a puppy mill was just found and eliminated.  They are in the news quite often and I thought many many people knew what puppy mills are.  So hopefully, they will share this with other people and those people will help inform others too.

Good for you to enlighten people  [:)]

I actually just moved to Pittsburgh not long ago, but was unaware of the Amish puppy mill.......  maybe I read about it and didn't realize it was amish?  ahhh, teach me to read the papers!

Google - "Amish Puppy Mills"...  quite an eye-opener.   I'm honestly really surprised that those of you who actually live in PA and are constantly exposed to local news, etc. don't know about them.  They are said to be the biggest perpetrators of puppy mills in the country.   I will not support the Amish in any way - I will not buy their baked goods or visit Amish Country, etc.  They view animals strictly as a utility and it makes me sick.  Sorry!  off my soapbox.  Good for you in educating your friends!   You should be proud of yourself, just spreading the word does make a difference.

Wow, it is a big thing.  Huh.  I did only move from NY 2-3 months ago, and with starting a new job and adopting our dog haven't really spent time watching the news, and the newspaper is usually only good for the Cryptoquip [:)]  I will definitely really start paying more attention to things like this to educate myself.

I've been able to "educate" as well..a few months ago I was talking to my mom and telling her to never go to this pet store by us that sells puppies. She was saying things like, "Oh, but they take 'accident' litters from nearby people, oh, but they are so cute, oh, but they look fine." She wasn't really buying my story until I said that as far as most "dog" people are concerned, no reputable breeder would just give away puppies they cared about to go to total strangers. And you can buy "accident litter puppies" at the Humane Society for a fraction of the price of some pet store.

After that, she was like, "well...yeah, I guess you are right. Why would they give them away to a stranger and not know who they are going to end up with if they really cared about them?"
