Redbone Coonhounds.....

One thing that I did hear from all of the owners was that these dogs had to have positive training, otherwise they would shut down. They said that they are softer than a working group breed like rots, etc, or gundogs. Is this just a Ridgie thing or is this all hounds?

Most hounds are pretty sensitive.  All positive reinforcement and lots of love.  Just like agilebasenji said, or they can and will shut down.  The best part about owning a sighthound is actually two things: the love and trust that you see in their eyes, and just plain watching them run is an awe inspiring event that will take your breath away no matter how many times you've seen them do it.

Just curious--this is really for anyone who has a hound, but how would you classify Xerxes' intelligence?  From what I have read about the Ridgies they seem like "thinking" dogs--like a dog that really assesses the situation before acting....

I own a half CoonHound and he is unbelievably smart. In a training class of about 20, he was far and away the smartests pup in the class.  We started him in the class at 10 weeks old and by 18 weeks old, he was unreal.  The trainers were blown away by his progress.  He is half lab as well, but labs are not particularly known for being extraordinarlily smart from what I hear.

Anyway, I could could go on and on about how quickly he has picked up commands, but I'll just leave it as he is VERY smart.

On the other hand, the Ridgei is beautiful and will be my next Dog.  My Lab/Coon was given to me, so I had no choice, but my next dog will be a Ridgey...wow...what a dog.
